Today I was volunteering at a post office. A man in an old jacket with uncombed hair came to the counter. He had a wallet in his hand, and put it on the counter. He told me: 9 K( U) H1 X1 W" K S7 D2 S _
"I am going to send it back".
4 @: C4 v9 e. L0 F+ i% `3 JI did not understand what he meant by "it", because usually people would send a letter or a parcel back to the sender, and I did not see he had any of those. So I asked him:
+ Z6 M3 W$ S9 q "I am sorry, what are you sending back?"
, k& d: ]' h5 l6 x$ \He said, "the Wallet, I am sending back the wallet." Then he added: "I am going to pay the postage." * O& o: s1 c7 l1 \: {( m
"Oh, you found a wallet, and you are going to send it back to the person who lost it?"
k5 p/ T4 L4 d0 L9 p"Yes, I did."7 P V( Q( ]# Y
Finally I understood: this dishevelled man found a wallet, and he was going to return it to the owner by post. 9 f, N3 c) z$ u8 o5 G9 N/ N* A
He took the ID card from the wallet, and showed me the address of the loser of the wallet. I saw there were several one-hundred bills in the wallet. " b) ^; a4 e# o
"Are you going to take some money from the wallet to pay the postage?"
* U W+ R' }6 b9 `"No, I am not. I do not do those things.", X! {& ~: v- u; d
He took out his wallet, which was nearly worn-out, small, and almost empty. There were some coins inside. ; i8 ~. [- h3 g+ i/ _ a2 A6 Y
I gave him a bubbled envelope, and instructed him where to write the addresses. He wrote the owner's address, but stopped at writing a return address. He asked:) b8 T1 ^( k9 \ P. C$ a
"Is it okay that I do not write this part?"0 K6 B. {8 Y0 N. N D. O
"Yes, you may." I thought he must want to be a nameless hero. But he said:
' C/ V; S9 \4 V W6 D"I do not have an address."% o- _7 l J" k- R( E4 P) \, G
I was surprised: "oh, where do you live?"
' ?% s0 U/ i$ a1 G* b n" jHe did not look up, and said: "I do not have a home."
1 e3 p2 y( F* |6 f3 ?1 Z# XMy heart had a sudden jump. I realized that this is a homeless man who found money but was sending it back to the person who lost it. 1 s! N, O. n, K: S
He did not a posses a home, but he had a big heart. He had the precious fortune of being a man of integrity.
