A vote held earlier in the week saw 84 per cent of students in favour of the passes, which will be mandatory regardless of whether or not they ride on transit.9 r+ N9 d4 C& e

3 X/ _0 u% g' K' XGetting to this point took five years of debate and negotiations, said U of A student union president Samantha Power on Friday.

( n+ [' p: e) U; z; ["We really needed to make sure that it was affordable for students because it's mandatory. We didn't want students who don't use transit as often to be put at a disadvantage, so at $75 for four months, it's about one round trip a week."

Power said the U-Pass will be environmentally friendly by encouraging more students to use transit, and those who already buy monthly passes will save about $300 a year when the new pass kicks in next fall.
