Main duties

Non-destructive testers and inspectors perform some or all of the following duties:4 w+ N+ v. z% K
Set up and calibrate non-destructive testing equipment3 X G6 l! [4 A9 Y5 T- J7 W
Conduct tests to ensure quality or detect discontinuities (defects) using ultrasonic, radiographic, liquid penetrant, magnetic particle, eddy current and other non-destructive testing methods) c) \. P* `# H* S; |7 E5 W
Establish techniques for proper examination of objects under inspection, ensuring strict adherence to safety regulations
# Y9 {; o5 ~8 N O% M) Q, o, [) uInterpret radiographs, cathode ray tube (CRT) or digital readouts, conductivity meters and visual indicators
) o* D0 T; u2 k! q! AApply testing criteria in accordance with applicable specifications or standards and evaluate results* i" @! G# {5 V- J
Organize and report test results) i6 r, I) \6 ?% L# A% x' R: g3 `5 S
May perform specialized inspections using acoustic emission, vibration analysis, infrared thermography and laser shearography testing methods

Employment requirements

Completion of secondary school is required.
+ ~( j% h+ u1 r8 TCompletion of two years of an approved post-secondary science or engineering program may be required.

8 ~1 [6 ]/ p b) |& r2 a8 FNon-destructive testing certification by Natural Resources Canada is available in three levels and is usually required by employers.
$ I/ [1 c6 ?5 A! {Industrial radiographers using a radioactive isotope must pass an examination to be recognized as a certified exposure device operator by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.
! }& I, {$ q' k# C( T/ S2 W5 YWelding inspector certification by the Canadian Welding Bureau is available in three levels and may be required by employers.
6 A! B9 e* t7 Y# {2 KBoiler and pressure vessel, process pipeline and above-ground storage tank inspector certification is available from the American Petroleum Institute.- P* Q/ [/ `2 l! ^
