0 x  j7 k7 K" yGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Dear International Undergraduate Students,
2 A: A8 E6 H% |: M
Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
  {# q! \& ]+ GCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
news to report from that meeting.

First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
4 d1 n  i2 F% k/ G: S& hundergraduate international students from the increase to the
5 Y& B! d0 R; }# X" {6 Fdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
- |* E4 w6 y- P: S7 ?8 v0 Xstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
6 O4 e' J  P, X) q6 Htuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
% d4 @" s/ o  N; n* e( hthe differential for international graduate students.
9 }% S! A7 k9 j* ?# V
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
: r5 U  e: q3 w5 Q4 g' y1 T, G6 K220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
6 I+ S  ]& y* U* {! ]: ~) V- ?% Ltuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
/ x$ v3 l$ X8 O( O0 n. k+ [increases once they are here.

# f( j1 Q# C: DThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
' p& k4 ~6 Y& O# t$ ?+ f/ k9 @" f: binternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
) t& H3 }; e$ M8 ^* A  l' Owould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
" M: ?* Q0 S# ?5 y$ Fhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
0 [8 T0 `% {  Rincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
help. Thank you.
