International tuition. Let's get it on.

: v. E, y5 o1 J9 d- AGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Dear International Undergraduate Students,

# y0 b" ^5 [; k, vYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
news to report from that meeting.
. i) _7 n' b0 c# y5 f( m
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
3 n* k5 a$ u* \8 }7 ]7 j3 C) Oundergraduate international students from the increase to the
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
0 a$ T5 U2 l. Gstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
& E# w4 n$ _) Dtuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
the differential for international graduate students.
: H0 w2 [; \$ R1 U7 B5 q5 b2 C2 D
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
6 `/ A1 h1 M: x, t$ Cincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
5 I' k4 x1 {" \! o+ X6 \( Rwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
9 S0 I, h: d4 u% S+ ~8 k9 t& J: ntuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
4 p+ @; D/ [, Dincreases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
, S) T' A- C, E( Fwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
1 r3 S6 e4 T. l/ e6 G" {9 Jhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
) Z, l6 o4 p5 @* k6 Dhelp. Thank you.
