0 o5 F+ F! T2 P9 n2 s: nGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. 9 j8 s- c9 b1 v, {3 Y+ t4 V

9 p6 E: t3 N0 _9 HYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
4 }' T4 p$ j, T+ I$ G& {- R3 D! o" s5 gCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad $ q+ B/ C. S5 {$ p- e5 s
news to report from that meeting.
9 Q) V; Y: c) L- q5 L' n, ^, v# E' v% h8 l. s
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
& x5 j7 B1 H# } [1 R8 [, sundergraduate international students from the increase to the & h! R$ {8 w8 p% Z6 ?( O
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
. d; C3 f. {8 ~0 N* J& h( ystudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
; O! I1 a5 ]# Ftuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). 5 P* d) @8 J6 I6 V) M: }5 l
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase 1 Y1 l* X. x& G5 g# E9 e& p
the differential for international graduate students.
7 G+ G: ]/ c* A$ @* H/ p
) R; f, X6 w* o' SNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an 5 D. P) y0 ~+ u: B* G- e) ]2 M
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
. C! l- f9 n0 w4 u" U+ B7 T7 y" i220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
' \: W. _ w7 z, T$ ywill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
7 Q& T- x- s% S& `0 uleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
/ a& p# T1 f; e T7 E( L2 S6 T" Utuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected * t& u8 _! }; W! y3 \8 e
increases once they are here.

) d7 X* v0 V( J9 O3 W; mThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
; \/ U' D* ^6 Xinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I 7 W3 `" P2 x/ Z7 l: Z
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that * N$ T7 u+ B1 X3 Q' m) \
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this . B" w5 V1 X0 G4 d* j. [) d2 ~
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your ) Q, v2 w; ?9 o( n+ A
