5 k% ]/ c: c( C2 b$ `# KGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Dear International Undergraduate Students,

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
news to report from that meeting.
; @2 O' V7 r* E% O5 Z
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
$ g* k0 U' n6 s1 n. Sstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
/ J- f4 c9 N& X7 @$ I0 ~  [& Othe differential for international graduate students.
3 G9 k# P, ^! s- s' f' p! R
( {  L5 ?( F/ l! _  @. M: K( J" ONow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
3 K: f8 u' z) M: J220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
) m, |/ L0 F, j" D1 W( ^2 z- F6 K( wleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
) b* [% `! v$ ]: Eincreases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
! w3 W* n9 V3 j- m! \, d0 Lhelp. Thank you.
