3 M  V6 J" v8 j! ]. JCALGARY — Screams filled the air after a 17-year-old teen was killed after being struck in the head with a pickaxe at a house party.

Neighbours said about 100 teens were at a house in southeast Calgary when the attack happened in a detached garage about 11:50 p.m. Saturday.

A man who lives next door said he saw a body on the ground in the garage.

( ]' G9 |$ l8 t* l1 g5 A  ~$ S) a“I was standing out back having a cigarette then I heard a kid screaming, ‘They killed him,’ then they all scattered,” said Jeff, who didn’t want to give his last name.

Jeff said two high school-aged girls live at the house with their mother. He said large parties are common at the residence.

Friends identified the dead teen as Matt McKay, 17.

) n1 k; w* V- A! h( A! |Chris Briggs, who grew up in the same neighbourhood and was friends with McKay, described him as nice guy and avid athlete.

“He was a pretty good guy,” he said. “He played hockey with my friends, he was huge into hockey.”

9 q& J3 Y3 @4 B+ \Staff Sgt. Kevin Forsen said police are currently interviewing more than 40 witnesses to the attack.
