4 [3 l( w8 r( X& N6 dCALGARY — Screams filled the air after a 17-year-old teen was killed after being struck in the head with a pickaxe at a house party.

' @9 d5 N0 H5 J3 `5 t# ~Neighbours said about 100 teens were at a house in southeast Calgary when the attack happened in a detached garage about 11:50 p.m. Saturday.

Lisa Poole, who lives two doors down from where the teen died, rushed outside when she heard a lot of screaming.
“
I saw one boy laying there with a pickaxe stuck through the front of his head and some blood on the ground ... I haven’t slept at all and I can’t get that picture out of my head.”

; ~+ X1 O0 X. i“I was standing out back having a cigarette then I heard a kid screaming, ‘They killed him,’ then they all scattered,” said Jeff, who didn’t want to give his last name.

Jeff said two high school-aged girls live at the house with their mother. He said large parties are common at the residence.

& |5 h5 c" v* sFriends identified the dead teen as Matt McKay, 17.

1 [2 V6 s& F' _- FChris Briggs, who grew up in the same neighbourhood and was friends with McKay, described him as nice guy and avid athlete.

“He was a pretty good guy,” he said. “He played hockey with my friends, he was huge into hockey.”

5 |" `+ j5 I' z2 mStaff Sgt. Kevin Forsen said police are currently interviewing more than 40 witnesses to the attack.

“We’re talking to a bunch of people who were there to find out what happened,” he said.

“The kids have been fairly co-operative and forthright.”
