Housing price growth accelerated in January for the second straight month, Statistics Canada said Tuesday.

The agency said stronger housing markets in Atlantic Canada and the Prairies pushed contractors' selling prices up by 6.5 per cent between January 2007 and January this year, a faster pace than the 12-month increase of 6.2 per cent seen in December.

% ~- U0 J7 N8 qIn Halifax, prices rose 11.4 per cent between January 2007 and January this year, while homebuyers in St. John's saw a 12-month gain of 9.1 per cent.

Windsor, Ont., recorded year-over-year deflation for the 16th month straight, as prices fell 0.9 per cent from January 2007.
