The YOUCAN VERTO Project is a Government of Canada funded project that will
4 m7 n8 h+ m; Z1 mbring 12 (per intake) at-risk youth together into a unique 20 week group-based
4 J. c1 v0 _7 ` ^; [employability skills program entitled “The VERTO Project”; 16 weeks of day7 @& R6 B# m3 J& B( i1 Q2 L
program and 4 weeks of employment exposure. YOUCAN is an acronym that v; y+ d; E4 _9 p# [
stands for Youth Organizing to Understand Conflict and Advocate Non-Violence.
: @* l' z' p$ |+ p9 t3 wYOUCAN has served youth in the Edmonton area for almost six years and our! j* X+ t% V# G! {, O6 N% _
mission is to equip youth to engage and inspire others to peacefully resolve
! N ^/ p: w" g0 Dconflicts and develop healthy relationships in their communities. The goal of the
: s7 R0 C. e5 c% Z$ c- [VERTO Program is to assist participants in obtaining and maintaining the skills
9 y$ H# D" T- H2 _necessary to bring success into their lives. The program is designed to serve* {, Q. ^/ n* }4 K
youth who have been involved in the justice system. The program will expose. L0 @: B9 x; _& E* v# M1 ?
participants to a wide range of components focusing on: employment
2 Y3 f: O% Q6 ? Q: A- K4 I+ {/ bdevelopment, personal wellness, technology learning, conflict resolution and {7 f) Y* k5 R
exposure courses. Additionally, we will incorporate topics around health and4 A7 t8 X3 l+ g$ ?7 r
wellness, volunteerism and leadership courses. The youth will be provided with a( ^; Q; A, o8 U$ `
6-month employment follow-up once the program is completed.

The following position is a one-year contract with the possibility of

7 p! c' e5 i E+ A! P• Responsible for building relationships with employers within the
$ ~0 Z# r7 ^$ k9 j: L! hcommunity to partner with YOUCAN to ensure there are employers that are& P$ R0 e+ P* ^* y8 N
willing to expose youth to the current employment opportunities
# O/ N. I8 d' n+ Q6 h& i" w3 Y1 ]• Ensure the youth action plans are reflecting the employment goals as8 S5 N4 l' A7 [9 i; w
being realistic to each youth participant2 r5 m9 P& Y n
• Work with the youth to find the appropriate training needed to equip the
8 `5 \& c( P o, j' J: B+ [4 k& [6 Yyouth with the necessary skills needed to find the employment suitable to- l$ q+ `6 v" m; o, @
each participant
6 `0 R) K1 p! f4 j; a& p: Z• Assist youth with employment development including the development of
/ e" q7 T7 C: {; @: u, Lcover letters and resumes etc.
" b* a/ o# @* W( {5 z' e• Coordinate the employment exposure component and on site work
" T% N3 \* C! ?" aexperience of the project, and monitor the progress of each youth at the& @# ]8 k- F/ \* O9 c
placements
2 t9 ]5 ~% D( v" b/ O! s9 n• Conduct the 6 month follow up process for each of the youth, evaluating: D$ a6 f. G6 z {: @
the process, and supporting the youth where needed
1 g4 T9 U6 J: }8 s; d• Work closely with staff of the Verto Project to ensure the holistic approach
) A* G, i+ Q6 L; F+ Sis being fulfilled for each youth
: x( ~% ]0 }2 ^& s+ K) n; W• Administrative tasks, such as phone, fax, filing, copying, etc. that are- p) k6 ~( u" ?% @6 C
related to YOUCAN’s Verto Project

Experience Required: Employment Developer
$ I; S; J" k1 T" p6 P Post-secondary education or 3 years related experience accepted
% g% ]0 I6 E) u A minimum of three years relevant experience is required.
9 g- ]. o, k6 i Enthusiastic and energetic innovator who is process-oriented and committed

 Experience working with youth at risk, and able to assess the needs of youth
