The VERTO Project
The YOUCAN VERTO Project is a Government of Canada funded project that will
bring 12 (per intake) at-risk youth together into a unique 20 week group-based
. @9 R7 D8 M5 ^2 `; Bemployability skills program entitled “The VERTO Project”; 16 weeks of day
) c1 _" R6 d4 j  H0 C7 Zprogram and 4 weeks of employment exposure. YOUCAN is an acronym that
; b9 D( c9 d0 ?6 `- pstands for Youth Organizing to Understand Conflict and Advocate Non-Violence.
YOUCAN has served youth in the Edmonton area for almost six years and our
mission is to equip youth to engage and inspire others to peacefully resolve
7 A( b5 @! g, T+ q( ]+ c- ?conflicts and develop healthy relationships in their communities. The goal of the
VERTO Program is to assist participants in obtaining and maintaining the skills
8 O. u- F. [2 I7 xnecessary to bring success into their lives. The program is designed to serve
1 x7 v! x3 V9 l" u' c  h5 Yyouth who have been involved in the justice system. The program will expose
- t* p' N* l( [  Z: |+ hparticipants to a wide range of components focusing on: employment
development, personal wellness, technology learning, conflict resolution and
) H- \( A" E! Z0 c1 kexposure courses. Additionally, we will incorporate topics around health and
wellness, volunteerism and leadership courses. The youth will be provided with a
6-month employment follow-up once the program is completed.
The project will run from 9:30-4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday at the Central
* j# D5 g% s5 w0 C6 a+ aYOUCAN office, located at 8718-112 Avenue in Edmonton, Alberta.
1 `: h/ P' _; V5 _8 h- `( XThe following position is a one-year contract with the possibility of
* i0 w7 I+ J& A' A3 @+ [. Fextension dependant of funding and performance. Resumes will be

• Responsible for building relationships with employers within the
community to partner with YOUCAN to ensure there are employers that are
willing to expose youth to the current employment opportunities
% [' |* r6 L% N% O; O4 w  X0 C• Ensure the youth action plans are reflecting the employment goals as
0 b* D1 B0 R5 n, }0 g$ o) V7 Kbeing realistic to each youth participant
- b6 H2 W+ \6 J! p# U# {• Work with the youth to find the appropriate training needed to equip the
% I4 K& j+ y# f) F; @youth with the necessary skills needed to find the employment suitable to
1 L7 @! _9 u" S9 M; ~# heach participant
• Assist youth with employment development including the development of
$ m0 T/ [) r, B( k* h: ycover letters and resumes etc.
- ?2 V7 q7 F0 |. [5 s• Coordinate the employment exposure component and on site work
experience of the project, and monitor the progress of each youth at the
placements
) [+ U8 h" m0 w* I: M$ P• Conduct the 6 month follow up process for each of the youth, evaluating
, \5 p$ g* S% e! J( d9 d8 hthe process, and supporting the youth where needed
• Work closely with staff of the Verto Project to ensure the holistic approach
5 G8 f! J: s0 `8 h' v) ?is being fulfilled for each youth
• Administrative tasks, such as phone, fax, filing, copying, etc. that are
related to YOUCAN’s Verto Project
• Other tasks as they arise within the position
Experience Required: Employment Developer
% Q7 W+ |- h, ~% h$ W* C Post-secondary education or 3 years related experience accepted
 A minimum of three years relevant experience is required.
 Enthusiastic and energetic innovator who is process-oriented and committed
to success.

" F5 T9 Q7 v0 p  w& C+ U2 \7 j+ S Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, organizational and

 Strong connections with industry, or the ability to make those connections
quickly
 Strong skills in building relationships with industry and youth
3 O3 T1 ?. Q2 S$ }* D1 ~, i Experience working with youth at risk, and able to assess the needs of youth
at risk as it pertains to employment
 Skilled in software applications, computers and other office equipment
% j: p' l9 p2 |7 E Strong leadership and active listening skills
 Ability to motivate youth
