Cabbies call for mandatory safety shields

Edmonton police have arrested a 17-year-old male in relation to the stabbing and robbery of a city cab driver on Thursday.

# B: ?4 W' i* A$ ~9 M/ _The driver was assaulted around 1 a.m. after picking up a man in the area of 80th Street and 15A Avenue in Mill Woods. He remained in his vehicle as the suspect fled in the area of 72nd Street and 11th Avenue. He activated his emergency button to let the cab company know he had been assaulted.) o9 ` Q$ t/ }2 t* c) r
& p+ h3 ]: a$ E9 d
The driver, Ratnesh Prasad, a family man in his 30s, was stabbed twice in the chest. As police began searching for his assailant, Prasad was taken by ambulance to Royal Alexandra Hospital where he was assessed as being in stable condition. Z5 q) U1 b4 t, N: j+ R9 L* ~$ W
2 @( R' y+ A* l4 IPolice located a suspect and interviewed the teen twice before charging him with robbery, aggravated assault, uttering death threats, possession of a weapon and four counts of breach of recognizance.# r: x1 j' o$ N

The name of the suspect cannot be released because of provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

; c+ c7 q; D& M& A* J8 aPrasad's stabbing sparked a noisy protest by cabbies Thursday as 75 cabs circled City Hall for half an hour as drivers again called for safety shields to be installed in their cars.

The issue of whether to make shields mandatory is expected to be addressed next month by city council. Cab companies have said Plexiglas barriers separating the driver and passengers should be optional. @* N( h- i# u
