The Advanced Materials business unit seeks a Safety Assistant to assist the business unit over the summer months.

Responsibilities include:

1. Chemical list and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS’s)
. J, {2 z- d& y$ a2 c• help complete up-to-date chemical lists for all laboratories within the department- H3 o7 k' b+ u
• collect and obtain MSDS’s for all chemicals- @, V- H* N! W% \; V9 i( w* h' g4 t
• make sure all chemicals are properly labelled and stored
7 s0 m1 [( c, }1 ^• proper disposal of all unwanted chemicals
5 l3 Q. Y" s( M7 M" N• finalize chemical lists and then duplicate and label all MSDS’s for distribution to OH&S for the MSDS on line system.0 [. D8 y+ Y% n. N3 A' g7 |

2. Standard Operation Procedures (SOP’s) and Hazard Assessments (HA’s)
, F# _4 k; f9 z7 H3 X# b$ Q• help update the department SOP’s and HA’s. This will include verification of existing SOP’s and HA’s and tracking any that are needed.2 I% z% s0 l! ]- q
" T4 S1 u1 O% Q6 g$ z3. Tracking System
4 S9 V- }! m% ?) u# U6 c! z! x, {! \• help develop a tracking system for adding or removal of chemicals as well as continual updating and verification of SOP’s and HA’s

Candidates should be inquisitive, thorough, and willing to learn. Some education and/or experience in safety is preferred. Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment are required.

This is a two-month summer position, preferably commencing the middle of June, which will pay an hourly wage commensurate with education and experience. Final candidates will be asked to undergo a security screening.
