EDMONTON - Prices for new homes in Edmonton fell 5.3 per cent in July compared to the same month last year, marking the biggest year-over-year drop in 23 years, said Statistics Canada today.& y( c9 v$ |, w- [& ?, F
4 N0 V1 V6 x9 C- T5 REdmonton's cooling market showed the biggest year-over-year drop of any Canadian city.

"Markets in these cities continue to adjust after experiencing record price increases in the last two and a half years," the federal agency said.

$ S! { E5 E2 d- ]' M2 {Even heated Saskatoon posted a slower annual increase of 13.1 per cent, "further confirmation of a trend of deceleration in this city. Many builders reported increased prices as a result of higher material and labour costs," the agency said.3 y5 _" Q2 J/ v# y! ~0 y8 u) N
0 p2 A# [+ V3 u9 u2 M2 j3 o5 [The fastest pace was in Regina, which saw a year-over-year price increase of 29.6 per cent, down from its record rise of 34 per cent in April.6 S) v5 D! P. b1 G6 t3 _
1 g" A3 D! h" q# d. Q' ZAs the market continued to cool in Western Canada, prices for new homes rose nationally at a slower pace in July for the sixth consecutive month.

; a; K' u5 C9 N& t( C1 wPrices were up 2.7 per cent in July from a year earlier, down from June's annual pace of 3.5 per cent. On a monthly basis, prices edged up 0.1 per cent between June and July.
