SCOPE OF THE CONSTRUCTION ELECTRICIAN OCCUPATION

training and abilities, is capable of laying out, installing, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical) h2 C/ q/ l- w* {
systems, which provides light, heat, communications, and power to a variety of new and existing
' W2 l' a- {# N2 q; L9 uresidential, commercial, and industrial structures.
Y7 ^' Y# t7 ]5 Y# Y1 ^- uConstruction electricians read and interpret electrical, mechanical, and architectural drawings
' i/ j6 L1 R1 }, g% h8 N9 dand electrical code specifications to determine wiring layout. They cut, thread, bend, assemble, and. b3 j- s# P' T% U- d& F. h
install conduits and other types of electrical conductor enclosures and fittings. They pull wire and cable" `' Q3 ^, m5 U% E, r
through conduits, position, maintain and install distribution and control equipment such as switches,

underground, install data cabling, and install and maintain fibre optic and signalling systems.

/ H7 G+ |# M7 Y) e7 H" N- iall weathers; inside in dusty industrial plants and mills; to state-of-the-art clean-rooms in hospitals and- M/ z% D8 K7 X6 f1 G
manufacturing plants. The work often requires considerable standing, bending, crawling, lifting,4 e. g' G+ e, E3 I% R
climbing, pulling, and reaching and may be conducted in cramped, confined spaces or on ladders and5 l5 T2 s+ L8 a6 p' G: N3 u
scaffolding at great heights. Hazards include electric shocks, burns, and falling objects.6 o( q/ F8 n: j
Construction electricians are required to have good mechanical ability, a thorough5 O8 W$ D" T+ }, I& H
knowledge of the principles of electricity, circuitry, and power distribution systems, and familiarity with

All electrical wiring and installations must conform to the CSA Canadian Electrical Code.

For safety, permits and other regulations they follow local electrical, building and safety codes.

9 g- I$ G! b7 Q7 J# e( fwired environment requires construction electricians to be able to install a variety of wiring such as data,
9 {) c# O7 u" F% yaudio, video, signalling, and communication cabling. Electrical control systems are also becoming more
4 N1 Y/ i0 J" pcomplex, often solid-state or computer-controlled, which requires the construction electrician to have a! O% r, h( q$ ~7 H, ]; c8 n/ [3 f
