Master Composter/Recycler Program / Free!$ }! _# \* c$ [, j

/ A4 C# T/ m4 ]/ ?) N( \$ ]Dear colleague: once a year, the Waste Management Branch hosts the
1 s2 g+ M/ k3 z: ^, S4 R: ZMaster Composter-Recycler Program. Over a 3 weeks course schedule$ |* u/ H5 k- _7 X7 j) e* D- J
(Tues./Thursday evenings and Saturday) volunteers will learn about
% Z6 e: v& \6 u' a7 @1 qenvironmental stewardship in our city, such as: history of waste
B8 d9 d; j2 H) bmanagement; home composting; household hazardous waste;6 o0 p+ _, \, X
vermin-composting and residential recycling.1 {/ g: x6 T8 d
2 U u; D. r$ S. hThis course offers in-class instruction as well as several field trips
2 s/ Y# b# c! U) Z( ~ u' y$ r! U' gto various City facilities. After finishing the course, graduates) e% j- O' ?3 I4 j
complete 35 hours of volunteer activity promoting the four R's:7 q: V) ?0 q8 _* n, j
reduce, reuse, recycle and recover. Graduates become important. U% F: W! p# s1 M7 j7 R) M+ r
resources in their communities as they broaden awareness about the q9 X8 G+ x7 q" A' |
importance of composting and recycling.
+ h' E/ w+ L0 V+ S. A0 g- R& E- G7 n$ T% s5 c
Examples of volunteer activities include: help with Reuse Fairs & the( W. a U0 X, S0 C. u+ }
Reuse Centre; helping friends/neighbours with composting problems;( D4 Z$ s5 ]- ?" N4 M0 _, G( {
public education display booths; assisting with programs and' q+ J3 M3 f2 a2 J0 j# K8 Z
maintenance at the City Compost Education Centres; assisting at
- M: |4 C4 { l/ M2 P* }various demonstration gardens and general public and school

There are many other opportunities for volunteers to contribute and
( T' M) H- y5 B+ F8 v0 i& }. Dvolunteers are able to choose the opportunities that interest them the
( L) D# z% F7 e4 Q2 Omost. Curious about recycling and composting and sharing your
2 H7 `1 a# \( E4 N- S+ Uknowledge with others, then apply to become a Master; c' ~) d8 _+ C6 \( S9 Q

Course Dates: April 14 - May 2nd, 2009 -Tuesday and Thursday evenings
