Oil sands projects fuel provincial construction boom2 J! ~/ b( f9 O V9 n( d5 b
According to a March 2005 inventory of Alberta construction projects, oil sands projects are leading the way in the ever-growing Alberta economy.
0 G5 I- _* W! |! ~+ h% ]The inventory of construction projects is compiled monthly by Alberta Economic Development( AED ). The list compiles all developments in the province with a value of at least $2 million that are either recently completed, under construction, or planned to start within the next two years. As of March, 946 projects throughout Alberta fit that category.0 y6 {% \5 `8 _; W$ ~' Z0 K
Of these projects, oil sands construction accounts for $69.25 billion – the largest component by far. Suncor’s Firebag Phase 2 in – situ project, Millennium Vacuum Unit, and Voyageur projects are listed among the 47 oil sands initiatives. Projects by Syncrude, OPTI Canada Inc./Nexen Inc., EnCana, Canadian Natural Resources Ltd., and others round out list.
8 b/ S+ q* r$ V; U6 v; iOther leading sectors sectors are infrastructure projects totaling $10.55 billion, institutional projects at $5.5 billion, and conventional oil and gas at $4.37 billion.
