Edmonton's population grows by 30,000/ t# i9 _/ [3 K

$ S" G# g' L1 D- y* m; N& s% BEDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning./ I1 }) x+ k. f$ _( u3 R

The population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.1 i' h5 Q, V/ p( |
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.
5 c8 U9 D1 I. q! N"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said.
, @& _8 U9 o- S& d ^9 PEdmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.* J8 s0 q$ n8 o! A
This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
