Edmonton's population grows by 30,000

e% E# }/ e: oEDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.

+ z# c) {! e4 n4 Q& s) a3 q# GThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.

"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said.
7 Y+ ?7 ?; W; t$ W0 ]Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
6 }2 s7 t& c" S5 t# Y' N) x. qThis year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
