"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.- b; |. u* D( z
The population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.+ _4 U/ L4 E, l; @# r1 p
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.* N) O0 y0 ^1 }$ y0 v' @ n
"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. % c- y8 B. ~; ~$ Y J+ n
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
