Edmonton's population grows by 30,000

: `; `! z" ]8 ?: R, hEDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.
* u- S+ j2 J$ E- S"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.
$ F/ q0 B7 H( h; PThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.& J+ M9 S s% Z( G
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.
7 N; Y; S$ Y1 d) \7 | [1 w"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. 4 X, W5 W" ?9 z
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.. H1 `6 o. s! n3 s2 w
This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
