顺便说一下今年最后一次hiking出行的打算。

打算利用一个周末。 周五晚上开车到jasper. 周六早晨，开车沿着ice field pathway 向南走。 由于大多数景观都在路的西侧， 所以早晨拍片效果都比较好。差不多中午/下午到达bow lake, 就是我第一第二张图的那个lake. 然后走helen lake 的 trail.

Trail Description ; R0 d1 L9 o0 y9 j$ {

This wonderful trail takes you high into alpine country, a land of wildflower-filled meadows, glistening tarns, and rugged peaks. Beyond Helen Lake the trail ascends to its highest point, a 2,500 m ridge, from where there are superb all-round views, stretching to the glacier-clad mountains lining Bow Valley. ' I3 c8 [6 I" j) N3 x
9 V- F# E' s6 U* Q. s
For the first 3 km the trail ascends steadily through open forest, with some short, steep sections. The climbing is broken by an easy 10-minute level stretch at 0.7 km as you traverse a slope covered with Indian paintbrush and purple fleabane. The forest is not of the dense, claustrophobic variety - instead, there are frequent views through the trees of the huge bulk of Crowfoot Mountain and its glacier.

* m6 e- _2 F1 iAt 3 km, gaps in the trees allow grand vistas of turquoise Bow Lake and surrounding mountains, and the awesome views continue as you traverse an open slope: Crowfoot Mountain and glacier, Bow Lake, and south down Bow Valley to Mount Hector.& b* G7 k& E9 J- b: @ H A/ e
# ]5 |" J k# p& e" v; oWithin 5 minutes the trail bears left and quickly climbs a slope up to the high meadows that surround Helen Lake. The great views continue of Crowfoot Mountain and Bow Peak. As you crest the slope at 3.5 km, the castle-like Dolomite Peak rises to the right, its massive scree slopes topped with a turreted rock-wall. Directly ahead is Cirque Peak, and below its south face is the ridge that is your ultimate destination. Helen Lake is nestled beneath - it will remain hidden from view until the last moment. * v. g7 P: p9 T7 s3 u. U
$ q& H3 y# h+ L( \8 E$ ?8 m) k; mThe next 1 km is hugely enjoyable, level walking across beautiful meadows towards Cirque Peak, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and mountains. The conifer-covered valley of Helen Creek falls away to your right, with Dolomite Peak beyond. The tree-dotted meadows erupt into a brilliant show of color in late July with the bloom of red and pink Indian paintbrush, purple fleabane, western anemone, and delicate yellow columbine. The wildflower display is one of the best you will see in the Rockies.) S0 n5 l! I; T# F
7 R' g8 {' i% v+ J' x( V6 [. C- wAt 4.5 km, make a short, sharp descent beside a boulder field before the trail climbs once again to clear the final trees. Rock-hop across Helen Creek and you are on the final stretch of rolling, grassy meadows. Behind, the view of Bow Valley is stunning: the lush vegetation of the valley floor lined with snow-covered jagged peaks, framed in the foreground by the expansive Helen Lake meadows and stark scree and rock. 9 z) n5 ^2 m m* \0 V1 S# B
+ G/ Z. b: _- p; A1 |1 PAt 6 km you reach the edge of small Helen Lake, set within green banks and the scree and rock of Cirque Peak. The slopes around the lake are riddled with marmot burrows (and mosquitoes!), and the many marmots that make their home here show little fear of humans. Beyond the lake, a ridge runs south-east from Cirque Peak - your final destination, 1 km away.3 [5 w$ @0 L* g6 D* R k: j

The trail hugs the right side of the lake, climbs a grassy slope and heads up the steep scree at the back of the lake. In 10 minutes, pass a boot-beaten path on the left (used by scramblers to attain a lower point on the ridge on the way to the summit of Cirque Peak) and continue on the cleared path that switchbacks steeply up the scree. Look down on Helen Lake and other tarns that dot the meadows, backed by glacier-clad peaks.7 E7 i2 a- X5 v2 q

20 minutes from Helen Lake, crest the broad ridge. Bear right (off the trail) and make a final 5-minute climb up to the high point of the ridge, marked by a cairn, for a 360?panorama. To the north is Cirque Peak, with a small tarn beneath its south ridge. East is Lake Katherine and Dolomite Pass (between Cirque and Dolomite Peaks) with gray barren mountains and snow-capped Watermelon Peak beyond. Below to the west is Helen Lake and its surrounding meadows. And to the south is a most wonderful view of Crowfoot Glacier, the Wapta Icefield, Bow Peak and the mountains of Bow Valley. It is a wilderness of stark beauty, a land of glaciers, rock, water and meadow.

5 o. k/ J% B9 c" U cBeyond the ridge, the trail drops 105 m to Lake Katherine and Dolomite Pass, before turning north into Dolomite Creek valley and backpacking territory. Dolomite Pass, 2 km away, is certainly achievable as a day hike, but somewhat anti-climactic after the high ridge.

This moderately-strenuous hike leads to a windswept ridgetop with unobstructed views of a veritable sea of peaks including Utopia Mountain, with the Fiddle River snaking through the valley below. On the way up, you have an excellent chance of coming nose-to-nose with deer and bighorn sheep. And at the end of the hike, you can soak your muscles in the Miette Hot Springs, hottest natural springs in the Canadian Rockies. |
