McDonald's in the U.S. said the glasses have a very low cadmium content and that the recall is voluntary and "in abundance of caution." "The Shrek Forever After glassware were evaluated by an independent third-party laboratory, accredited by the CPSC, and determined to be in compliance with all applicable federal and state requirements at the time of manufacture and distribution. However, in light of the CPSC's evolving assessment of standards for cadmium in consumer products, as a precautionary measure, McDonald's determined that a voluntary recall of the glassware is appropriate," said William Whitman, the burger giant's U.S. spokesman, in a statement.
