The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition
7 J+ L# t- m3 u( o2 V* }Roles and Functions
' D6 o& I- x( G- i2 P. ?The Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the2 K" w. E* R* r/ [" |
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the
+ T% @2 @' s7 g! A; [! X2 @operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has# D0 ?# ~! Y% O) G3 {% R
the important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,
8 {6 X/ f+ b0 p5 r& [* l; u- roperational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular7 P8 D8 \/ l' A. B" a0 u
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is9 l. t9 M" R2 E$ N+ ]( ~6 k
conducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
% R8 S4 w' x temployee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires
- p- O. b9 C& ^- d. G. q0 vstaff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend3 [# }( z$ a" B, @' R6 I
all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.

The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:2 M) G& Q$ e2 x
1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the
+ K+ F" d6 I+ w& w: Y$ ?' Qofficers of the Coalition
& ?& @! x5 I% L$ Y- g# q2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural
+ y' p/ d( U2 @$ q: forganizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations
7 U- b. H( i7 ]and public institutions ?( v! J ^5 I: ~
3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through% Z8 `" w. {/ d4 f" Y, |
funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives5 U" N9 e( v a5 _# i4 R; y% r% T! N7 o
4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community

participation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society9 h% J. }* n# j, |
7. Offer opportunities for service providers to learn and experience working* r# Q; O' W! }, M, p
with groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically
) T3 |+ f# F7 Ndiverse backgrounds* p( D* v$ t; n. b* F! T3 \
& v) N2 K& k0 G# S& ^' n1 z
Administrative responsibilities:
* Q1 a0 l$ Y. P; ^6 F* l1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its
$ B; l1 _. \7 N4 v* hregular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of/ f" K( U/ a4 W' u: T( E0 h
directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the, F0 I% r( ~% k& `1 h
members of the Coalition’s financial condition., X2 I5 U0 }: v, r; q3 o
2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the
% E* @7 g% K! X6 [9 g. n; oMulticultural Coalition& Y; Z# D$ C; E& A* C) n" \% v
Relationship of the Coordinator to the Board$ B: p# C5 h, \1 v4 d' ]
All operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to
/ ]; P6 F' O2 L2 U. eimplement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating1 C/ D* U8 P* a& N
operations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
( i/ x4 a0 h9 R( g4 T" P: Y3 I* M0 UThe Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and. K+ _# o, H! d) g6 K# C3 p
aims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should
; m2 f! t: Q. T6 B; pbe noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership
" P8 N- T, q1 c" }5 f+ K r1 Z' Cparticipation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and) T8 x; H. I( l
facilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of9 p+ ]# `7 _3 ^& M
directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial8 u$ x& }8 C& f/ x/ D& D, b" C1 z
statement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all
. u: d& {9 F( t8 f* T# F3 E q1 {matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of, Y" K. a, I5 B& o
directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of! y& h. g' v& e {
policies already adopted% B" ]1 z& K, x$ A% v

for the complex dynamics of emerging immigrant and refugee

of immigrant and refugee communities with the interests and mandates

9. A minimum of 2 years experience in project management at the
