for Internet services. It is essential that I hear the views of Canadians

that we cannot support imposing a UBB business model on wholesale Internet" ?2 m8 Y4 } b0 x* A

( Z9 n$ U% q7 @9 l$ DOur government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are. h p$ L2 m6 N' {1 q5 }, T
an increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving
* l0 J; p0 H# h" j1 |innovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops
) L8 C/ N' D8 s1 u4 ]5 c/ TCanada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look! a( y( K) Q i5 s2 j4 w
carefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be7 N8 H; _$ |0 r1 @0 B) Q5 s. `
guided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and
( e! l* Z2 W% {; C$ `$ ?investment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing! V% n4 x+ k' z0 b! h

& W2 w% n1 ? t0 T# T+ r& V2 HThe Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has8 x# l3 Y" Y5 } F$ ~+ j
chosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large
( e/ c/ B- ~3 _number of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at

When the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the
, `5 @" F& `) f) U( p8 k- X# ^government will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in+ |! R9 Z% z! W2 `
line with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages, i' X; C( E3 x; e
competition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that
! w, H$ b0 R" Qany decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.
