on the issues that matter. Prime Minister Harper and I have been clear
$ O. b; T! D; B" w+ ]. ]3 dthat we cannot support imposing a UBB business model on wholesale Internet

Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are
. ~% n6 z- x. S. N2 T. ran increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving
! }- c5 }) [% y- H# {0 \innovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops+ z3 G$ S! c; k) T; g
Canada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look
2 s( x X) \% i- z" }7 d, Mcarefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be/ u$ H9 J9 ]; ?5 Y; u
guided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and
1 E2 \2 w) v U6 I* Uinvestment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing& d w( ^) a! ~ \
market forces to prevail. $ o. a$ a! c( Z
3 r @3 i! q9 u( {3 q( I! SThe Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has
$ y/ K5 d% u) g1 z y1 i3 V6 J9 qchosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large% k) m. A8 u" W/ r! a# q

government will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in

competition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that% g u! n/ Z8 d6 E: a6 P
any decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.
