Position Profile Heavy Duty Mechanics inspect, service, and maintain diesel locomotives in accordance with federal and company regulations.

They are also responsible for other important tasks, including:

Diagnosing diesel engine malfunctions and making indicated repairs
Operating machinery in a safe and effective manner
! ^. u9 \  T; I3 ]) s. IProviding daily locomotive maintenance that includes changing oil or repairing, replacing, cleaning and adjusting parts
Assembling and starting engines
0 \+ L1 ]2 F( o0 G. G; XDiagnosing locomotive component malfunctions
Preparing inspection, work and maintenance reports
3 `. {6 \* S! x, c$ iPerforming other functions as assigned

Frequently lifting weights up to 50 pounds
Occasionally lifting weights up to 100 pounds

Regular exposure to dust, pollen, fumes, noise and vibrations
# G. U: `  U1 G. ?" yWorking shifts, sometimes away from home
Basic technical knowledge of diesel

Using measuring devices and understanding visual displays
) C, E7 C% {: t" H# M" qMay need current, valid drivers license, CDL, and locomotive engineer certification
# U! [+ d4 I3 k& H: W6 cVisual acuity and hearing threshold tests are required for this position. Written pre-employment tests to become a Machinist Apprentice are required for this position. Completion of 3-year apprenticeship is required to become a Journeyman Machinist. This position is subject to night, weekend and holiday work hours when needed.
