The curfew bans youths from public places between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. – and gives police the right to question any teen between those hours.- U2 v' n% t+ ^7 s& ?

"It's such a ridiculous law that I think some people will, at the very least, go out after 1 just to protest it for that bare purpose," said high school student Cam MacDonald. Councillors who voted in favour of the curfew say it will help curb vandalism and other petty crime.+ `# G0 T# Q& | H, s- z

The idea first came from Coun. Peter Wloderczak, a former RCMP officer. "I proposed it because I know there's a problem out there at those hours of the morning," he said. "I'm trying to protect our youth."

But those against it say the curfew cannot be enforced – and wonder if it would stand up to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The mayor is one of the curfew's most vocal critics. Cathy Olesen called it a "dark day," adding "banning all youth from our streets is not the way to go." |
