6 I& P* A' S  V+ P1 cLanding in Beijing! R  v, f: Q$ G7 O0 n
. E) t  C4 y1 o' _
No one gets bored of travel details more than I do, so I will start with the first steps in Mainland China, ergo the Beijing International Airport (BEI). It is 4 PM, and we have to clear customs, grab our luggage, check it and then take another flight to Jinan.
6 K* d; q2 h9 }6 E9 a6 }
9 |( R( i, q4 A- K$ @! D4 fCustoms was not much of a problem, after all what can you bring into China that didn't originate there anyhow. They looked me over and read my disembarkment card, asked me why I was here, and let me go on my merry way.
3 q- ]1 C+ Q* |$ ~; b8 K6 r8 I+ d0 B; ~3 i
We head to the luggage claim area. Now in Edmonton, that means walking 500 meters and going down an escalator. In BEI it means walking 3 kilometers (with the help of a few moving sidewalks), which leads you to a couple of high capacity elevators, which leads you to a train. the train takes you to the luggage terminal which turns out to be 3 or 4 kilometers away. 3 ^. j" P* V9 b; C

# }7 x" y/ y" \6 A' D% N$ ?. Y: _It was raining at BEI, and there was a dense fog that shrouded the airport making visibility probably less than 1/2 kilometer. I was hoping things would clear up by the time we got to Jinan because I really wanted to see China, and for now all I could see is runway, and only 2500 meters of it at that. So off we go to Jinan. We land to torrential downpours and a fog so thick it was hard to see 1/2 kilometers in any direction. So much for seeing China.
2 H  A7 K& F; }. h  F- _
4 e" f) Y4 I# dWe were warmly greeted by the wife's family, 7 of whom decided to come greet us at the airport. We all climbed into a small van (most uncomfortable) and mad it home in the rain and fog. Again I was hoping things would clear up so I could see China.
8 l5 [; r  X% \6 kBy the next morning the sky was clear, the ground was dry and I was ready to take my first steps in China, go explore the neighborhood. Now because of jet laggy problems, we were up at about 6:00 am. The in laws were still asleep so wifey and I decided to take a walk around the neighborhood. We climbed done the obligatory 8 flights of stairs (no elevators in China - or very few as I would find out later) and into the back alleys around the apartments. I should mention that the in laws live in a quite luxurious accommodations, in a walled off complex with its own security staff watching the property 24/7. The floors are hardwood, the ceilings 12 feet high, and nicely furnished with ornately carved Chinese style furniture. But more on that later.

We were out at 6 AM, and there were almost no people on the streets. We walked for a couple of kilometers, and made it to a major street - 8 lanes wide, plus 2 collector lanes, and freakishly tall skyscrapers as far as the eye can see - which is still less than 1/2 kilometer. 5 C% W3 [% v; X4 p
1 s$ @# y' e; ]: `
I asked the wife if the fog ever lifts around here. She told me that what we are seeing is not fog, but pollution. I looked up at the sun and stared at it, and stared at it, and stared at it some more. If I had done that in Edmonton, my retinas would be burned to a crisp. Not in Jinan though, in Jinan you can look at the sun all day long and you might get a little scratchy around the eyes, but that's it. I could not believe people lived in this environment. Wifey told me to wait a bit, that the rain last night cleaned the air. She was right, by 4 PM that afternoon, we could not see the tops of some of those skyscrapers for the thickness of the pollution.& l' G1 L& w& R
We started walking back at around 7, and those deserted alleys were now completely lined with people selling every kind of fruit and vegetable you could aver want, selling fresh killed lamb, live chickens, live shrimp, crab and other assorted seafood. Some sold beer and hard liquor, some had freezers with iced cream bars and cones (ours are better tasting - sorry China but Canada rules the dairy world), along with clothing and nick-knacks of all kinds. We had just come by here an hour earlier and no one was here, and now the alleys were filled with buyers and sellers.
( ^1 l# U. F) Y7 Y
& Q$ S2 {3 f1 `( y- r3 g! b' _: A0 V
Now one thing I had been warned about was eating from street vendors, and that it was a quick way to empty your guts through a process called "Travellers Diarrhoea", which I am told is not fun at all. Wifey, who apparently has guts of steel, wanted to eat a breakfast wrap thing which was being made by one of the hawkers in the alley. She used to eat them all the time when she lived in China and was craving it badly. It consists of an egg-flour batter which is spread thinly on a dirty looking pizza pan that sits above a coal fire. Once it is cooked, shallots are sprinkled on it, and it is wrapped and served to you in a thin plastic bag. So she bought one for 3.80 Yuan (about $.60 Canadian). She ate half and I ate half. That could have been a big mistake, but I survived with no ill effects.; p: I8 Z0 X( |# O* K2 h- k
# C! O: z2 y+ c/ f7 J, O
+ Z5 Q' ]/ O9 ?, r: S8 i$ ^
We headed home, where ma-inlaw was cooking up breakfast. A traditional breakfast in China consists of making Soy milk, which is soy beans boiled until they are a thick soupy drink, and is served on bowl to drink from. I have experienced soy milk in Canada and I didn't like it there, so I was having no part of it. I found some bread in the refrigerator, ate some of that and had a couple of bottles of water to go with it. I knew that if I was going to survive China I would have to do something about breakfast. More on that later.

ok, BEI's terminal 3 building is as big as an imaginary building streching from Southgate to Heritage, and could be several times the size of WEM.
