You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
9 K# R7 Z& h* M& e4 s: u/ \1 ^/ w% V8 A: \4 f+ G, a' v7 x
I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school." y0 I4 t! Z* d% q0 j2 X; B
  y* I0 y3 j/ x. p" s* d' j
His name was Kyle.
( G9 @8 K; L8 _  n0 }2 ^" ]  t2 [5 ~4 G7 X
It looked like he was carrying all of his4 J9 [& C7 n' s; P8 ~- U
Books.
) p7 j, w, N" b1 [% D& h  b" ^
I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
& G5 F: s5 d- }& p5 {! P6 A2 u, T6 F
He must really be a nerd."8 O7 z% V, C+ d  O" Y( j

1 K. |) C7 a4 S8 l& fI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
/ _7 F  Y1 i" W7 `, R: Y$ k$ }: s. ~
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
- Y, B6 @) u3 k, b) }/ N2 I+ h4 C) j9 g- V$ P/ @
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
- s0 t; b- @; l8 v2 {! Z& O' e
) z1 {* M3 x% ~. GHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.' k! d( j% e! C5 d: n, G

# Y5 G8 B6 z) s; c6 h: THe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes4 W$ N3 }7 d2 }. \6 e

3 d2 {2 `0 i) ^; R. U( nMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.8 m; o! W3 H* o2 f' z  ~
0 \  U8 R" j1 f+ }2 M+ T
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.3 S; T) o8 a& R. S& J

' s3 p+ W1 c1 L5 K0 k/ G# [They really should get lives.. g) Q: |: I5 m4 k5 z

- r# x$ U) ^5 M6 @; y# ?5 E" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
; ?2 w/ r/ I$ [$ r& N* Q. x# e0 R. ~$ k7 E" g1 p, M
There was a big smile on his face.
$ d. W# B( `  k( N* N4 W
4 @  {+ u# ]6 ^" z/ ~( l, p4 w1 f) tIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.* J) L/ w3 O7 K, B% n% y# c

6 t" [. F' s* c* N% Q! a0 `I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.: ^$ d8 N) F/ d9 V- b, Y' v& @
, [5 _6 e+ M: O: L
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.
* ^) n. v8 Q% t0 Z/ E
! e4 C2 s3 K/ A4 O* {. a2 Z  t6 A- ?He said he had gone to private school before now.
  S4 ]9 C) S, c( V+ o% V
. x7 F- @# K" s7 GI would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
* W) E+ u! g+ \8 ^$ o5 R7 R
4 U/ A- }0 i: M* ~We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.5 ^" \" N, H  ~* k2 z/ _
& c3 P# `. H4 u! [
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.7 O+ L  |2 m/ c+ u) z2 Z9 n( T
4 I/ ^5 D2 z" l; {& w
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.. `; i& A5 H. O/ @! t

' B, y9 z( L: r: }He said yes.8 }( {/ O# f3 i& y( K( @+ P- M8 y
- \; }( a; [2 Y. f
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.

% D9 k" V6 T, m2 P2 w2 Z9 E( n# c& vMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
. y) v- T: R! N5 s, o& Q8 A( h. e( F( Y  R- o8 H, \; u9 F# Y
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!
: O: `- v# {& q# B' G$ y  }
, J# S5 ]% K: q0 @" He just laughed and handed me half the books.. s9 @+ T+ z) _* u) J: ~

% a. o; x3 A5 y: d4 \Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
; Y- W& Z$ A. ^% ^$ |; P
0 b8 K, B1 b2 Q4 ^$ S5 _/ AWhen we were seniors, we began to think/ v& T- t8 x( ?& Q4 t6 f
About college.7 ?# z+ G! a; f5 Y

9 V1 z8 n7 z# e+ L5 h$ U' NKyle decided on Georgetown, and I
4 N3 n9 }( s& u4 o9 H2 J$ gWas going to Duke.% ?/ T# k' E3 y! B: s

  _3 [, p- y0 g% v3 E0 q7 @2 m- pI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
6 m1 \" w* i. v# m  x) R" D( [/ K3 m
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
# A9 t* K/ v5 Z3 x- h& f
+ X( x2 l; f- M+ H& ^, U) H2 e% j7 ~Kyle was valedictorian of our class.
/ C3 }1 o% K0 ~8 n2 S% y
( e9 L+ ]/ Y: B" Y+ H; Y! PI teased him all the time about being a nerd.
6 u5 B( V. X3 @0 b  g) Q3 ^9 T1 _( h+ G# R4 o- B. ?; T6 J* i
He had to prepare a speech for graduation.
/ H' q6 M8 s6 U+ h9 X
% D/ q3 s4 b9 g( F) v6 eI was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak$ ?! t* {0 `3 |& C$ f7 t
! C8 ^2 T5 W2 S1 C9 `
Graduation day, I saw Kyle.1 F0 L3 Q  v8 H7 q9 w1 |1 T

8 A0 Q& j5 b% H! j' mHe looked great.6 ?1 [3 c) p* w+ A; F0 o1 E

8 E" C9 m  X( [9 f0 ^4 |& e" WHe was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
7 b2 O2 A$ P0 {' o
, V3 N# M/ U/ ]* R, h* d4 bHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.
9 e' I. ]3 J+ H% s$ [( x9 W* l* @" R: e9 }' A, G; l; u
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him./ L% y2 X3 i/ h- H& l
3 {1 a6 }- t" u
Boy, sometimes I was jealous.$ s& E: M0 ?; q
6 H1 G- U1 u, ~* n; z7 r
Today was one of those days.
! ^: D. R4 R" {/ n: t2 G4 A, I, R5 R4 ]
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.- o0 Q& M* `8 I. C

1 S" g$ `, K' ~( \So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
9 m( F$ ~7 L* a, ?: {; Z/ J/ T6 N2 H. d& Y
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
& U$ m7 f. w, d* ?0 u1 G& V* g3 s; r
"Thanks," he said./ F8 M1 ^- h' X! Q+ \- L" }
) {: h5 r3 ~/ k4 \: p& g
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
- _4 T* x1 t" z3 s( M1 S+ p( R2 ~5 c* r5 Y
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
, m/ q& k2 m- R8 ^
  ~+ N- X& ]4 ~* T  p3 U6 K3 JYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...: s2 s2 S8 F) ]  c6 K( y
% {4 G* _- h8 e4 k* H
I am here to tell all of you that being a9 S3 K7 P+ t& w- @
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.. U. }0 }' m& U1 l& a- C
; Q0 K% s* H" u+ B; t
I am going to tell you a story."
" c8 m: w8 G# L# d
- w3 ^) z- {6 `; j/ ~9 lI just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.
$ ]& H9 @; t1 H/ N: a# z
' o" A3 l& \1 s8 w9 WHe had planned to kill himself over the weekend.5 m* }8 e6 A' q$ l+ H( x/ Q
0 R0 u$ R$ H; ?* l& b% n
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home./ @2 q0 J8 O2 r& ?  [; ]
( p: O3 v# z3 D# V
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
* k9 f& p' Q* r4 p8 ^; M) }0 L  _4 k# y; \; a9 c$ m% P
"Thankfully, I was saved.
* M$ n1 m$ h8 V& Q" k  y+ c0 {/ S& [: w2 ?: Z% f2 A6 _
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable.". v& W5 ~! B8 j) `5 l
7 k# D) {' h% G+ C  P
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
4 q1 F4 p: [, @" f6 h3 o+ t) \! t5 a- c# n- c8 Y$ }. }
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.! L  @& ?: i, \# }/ b
% C6 o$ a5 Q  d2 z: F% d
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.
2 P5 z) d! [; E& q3 @1 }
# N( J& T" @$ }Never underestimate the power of your actions.* |6 n& B* p9 y. w2 E3 i
' Q' e# n4 A8 d
With one small gesture you can change a person's life.
3 O" g! A5 ^9 ^2 o: j! q  N* a9 n. i  M4 @  x6 e" Y
For better or for worse.5 s. V0 G- H/ ^" U7 g8 a7 O
9 Z: c9 x& z& A  T: \5 F% o
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way., \! f0 f: u) `) y  a
  I6 w) a) u% T
Look for God in others.
0 T3 `$ O0 k/ K; U3 l
- u* x3 T& H8 b% {3 kYou now have two choices, you can:+ n- b9 l9 V  D: w+ v: t! _! J. j0 r6 p

8 p) Y( Q1 g2 [1) Pass this on to your friends or* i& T! b+ _5 n" j. H
* D# ^! s8 t1 R( l. U
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.

/ Q5 y* i- L, AAs you can see, I took choice number 1.( i# \& e# G- w) e5 f
