You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
/ I1 r$ i9 l/ t# ?; Q- v( ?9 V4 ]3 Z9 F: F1 a& d
I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.6 G( A0 f' O$ B% w$ q) E
) F& M0 M' a" U
His name was Kyle.
, X% Q9 h7 k% h+ I& b/ ~7 @1 y2 g
It looked like he was carrying all of his
, S9 x8 x7 I5 X$ _% ?  HBooks.
8 A2 n4 w$ P. S% v0 ]1 F, ]; `- A' U. T8 e* G+ c& f. [
I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?1 n) E7 a# h, w' [4 n$ |2 V2 S

$ ~- ?. b4 w5 j3 @He must really be a nerd."
) D; T" H) z( K2 c' f: T/ u4 A& ~
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.$ `  Q+ }! @4 L3 Y; r  m
' v! \/ i6 S# ~. z" T9 Z3 L
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
2 W# a" j. p* v6 A; Z  {) u1 n2 S: z' p( P# D- x; M0 [# Q
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.% x5 ?; t3 v4 u) u+ e
5 P  l1 W8 B& ]
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.  D( W0 L3 W4 M
1 A$ v$ u; x9 ]4 w7 L
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes" k- B% ^7 E0 K3 I# p" e- b  M
& d- l5 U! X5 h0 I# c+ m
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.
3 a$ y5 s& a2 _  J  {
! {# A2 {2 t' G$ C% I/ EAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks." S2 K9 t& Z. J2 z. @/ v9 |: t

6 z& B  [) k1 F( A! rThey really should get lives.
. k8 A7 e5 b+ h) }% [6 O* X. g# q; c3 B
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"2 a# i! k: `+ z4 c

7 `7 S- Z% ~) O/ |: IThere was a big smile on his face.
* _% e. a, Y$ d! z3 T
  l$ K3 v5 B. N* q5 g3 H3 c# RIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
  q4 `+ g# [8 K: V; f; ?
' A; ^$ r! L6 P4 P( K. g. EI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.- i  j- `( @' k
. N, Z3 T3 s  }: _
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.
) {9 D- K, B* Q
4 c) C4 `2 i" T# P1 LHe said he had gone to private school before now.
/ Q6 P5 ~2 j9 b  s* A8 o4 h/ N$ g% a: u- q2 D  s
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
, _  h; |: U3 U% g0 C
; Q, C2 [8 |9 G8 F0 t1 l6 T" vWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
: o: p/ U! y" p7 {* u- p& A: v& D8 _' s+ k* r
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
0 i. o9 g6 g+ p  N9 k! b8 Y) O  y
% j, A1 ]' Z0 {* D8 J0 ?I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.
" E& P$ y) a1 E
& T" y- G# n3 q# }) n2 A. ]He said yes.' s- H5 G! p: a. z# \. U/ S$ L

7 h# c- N) t. }, mWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.% T+ g! `: ?' ]& k

0 S+ x1 c8 C' O) A, fMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
; @- ^4 y; w3 L3 _! C! \) w! y4 ^+ [: I) K$ R8 C* t0 d. |+ [
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!
5 K# V  M& C. i' t4 f9 \
  e1 U; Y4 l# d% y9 n# L8 x! g7 B" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
  x4 E0 A% l0 ~9 ]1 k# T" e; U5 c$ |6 }
+ \+ `( M" _3 [7 H5 ]7 j; B, m1 k2 O6 ?Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
* n7 i8 Y- D0 f
! {1 Q- P7 a, A) h+ @# L: TWhen we were seniors, we began to think. v- Y) f+ i- ^0 B
About college.
) \! l- f% J, x1 K9 x' c$ M1 k/ i$ A, p( P: Q
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I2 ]: W& H& ~9 H  v5 I
Was going to Duke.2 M: ?* w3 V* N3 `- n. [) R( J

: N9 C" V' x/ s" ?) S% CI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
  [1 i3 l0 \. p' z2 G5 W* U( |! W( O4 `8 _2 L$ i' Y7 I
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.7 H" o( a& o( q9 X1 D/ f, T
: U% N* Q3 I5 Q) V$ n  d# y9 O$ F
Kyle was valedictorian of our class.
* T0 t6 z7 j) m2 H. r% {/ R* }& Z( _" a1 W
I teased him all the time about being a nerd.
& n  o2 P6 {% Z- D8 W, F* q
# {& `! T3 o( n2 P1 `, _0 w& BHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.
- v% x! ^6 o" \  t' s0 q4 G  }
5 |, G! g( Z0 o  I# \9 RI was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak! r( U1 P, F7 a# q5 x" M4 c2 b, @6 A  F% P
6 p4 n& e1 |7 J" B
Graduation day, I saw Kyle.
( \2 u9 ~4 Q- r, _$ f0 a5 N1 C7 E' W: G2 y* O
He looked great.
# t$ t5 F! M* i7 K9 ~  f6 d( t
# k. z0 N; x" I9 X8 D7 h, LHe was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.3 r4 o3 w. F+ i# i6 Q* n
' B! O% y& D' Y2 m, J( D1 O2 [9 R. A+ }
He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.
$ U$ M9 N9 ~) _  h! {, b+ k3 n$ c+ l4 u' h  ?9 Y% T
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
4 J% {5 ?# P9 z9 @% Q
/ i2 w9 l) b: A7 W; ~, ?$ W1 }Boy, sometimes I was jealous.7 p7 n7 p% w+ ~" ^1 }) D

: b: N& d9 d2 [, h# g  y* o& LToday was one of those days.
5 z0 Y* {% h2 q4 d- J8 W( A/ ^1 k; B; j2 X% P& d+ U1 G
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.- ~- P' G( [+ V! R+ ~
, R. d* {2 Q  Q6 \  m2 `$ t
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
4 _9 v$ z/ B' I$ P
: p3 Q/ F/ {$ c' KHe looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
+ }2 s" n& s  E7 G( x
3 q1 J* w/ W8 v"Thanks," he said.7 p5 x% l% c% `" Q

, V" w; F+ G/ F0 P' pAs he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began4 M' r8 c# W1 \: d
+ B# @7 o4 y& A5 l7 u" M
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.& [( P$ P- c- \4 `  u
; y. Q' a7 R, I( I# m9 X" Y
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...: n8 U- g$ J2 R4 w$ s5 F+ S

; ?* d& F; C/ _I am here to tell all of you that being a
7 p0 V  g; s8 v+ ]& QFriend to someone is the best gift you can give them./ h: W6 t5 u* \
. j2 V2 E! m0 o6 I; m9 r
I am going to tell you a story."9 o6 X, y  Q5 J' v9 N) z; s- e

# O! V, n# o* w5 oI just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.
: @5 G8 W- K- P! d$ Y/ R9 i8 ~" @& H
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.4 A4 e2 O( n. Q) S) S1 s

0 l0 J! n$ G; q6 X9 J  {He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.1 w. E! F7 s1 }' d9 K2 a. s% S

, N0 P- J  I) s" J4 UHe looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
  n1 @4 Q0 t' i+ Z9 b2 f: Y/ e' f2 R6 W6 ?! _  K' W+ |1 V5 }
"Thankfully, I was saved.2 W. E8 D1 x$ E* N  J" @. R: h% P

9 f6 n+ [" w4 \2 M, I% \. t# cMy friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
& M: @5 M( c9 X6 _
1 E% z  A: h& R$ sI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment." s  W( L6 k$ F- h& [5 M
6 h& q  V2 B' I; [: v$ [
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.# U* M  w5 t$ I" P* `5 ?

* ?- U; L, u1 z3 G' z/ i4 o4 aNot until that moment did I realize it's depth.
# f: z, `$ f1 D5 G, k7 y/ ~+ `3 z$ c# b
Never underestimate the power of your actions., n3 D& ^. ?7 s+ ^+ B& N

2 e  v  Z7 H9 v' A$ gWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.+ M" k3 c) l% d- b7 k( b5 {% K4 h, D4 y
) `6 B& `+ H3 @
For better or for worse.2 `0 Y! b2 c8 J/ V

" @2 T1 d3 D9 e: cGod puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.( M. R6 N& X4 I; N. f$ c0 t; `. b

* e2 K4 ]  J9 {. V+ `/ QLook for God in others.* x4 v; Y, U8 r' q

2 }* M& [. F* z! L5 WYou now have two choices, you can:
0 W. z5 i+ s, b6 [
, }# T4 u6 }2 e. e! o* o+ O1) Pass this on to your friends or$ u' _' v# L- Z3 x
# a; p4 ~. m) T' A/ c
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.
- o% r% x" T) {3 K$ h: y# E* x5 n( m0 A" u0 t
As you can see, I took choice number 1.
9 o* n5 Q- g1 q3 f% Y0 F/ W8 ?"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."4 m* D6 s1 Y, e* {0 r8 X: G
" e- Q+ j# f7 q8 ^# R' H6 z* D  j
There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.4 W- L( d4 h& b
0 Q  b9 L' o' M8 H, @' @. [
Tomorrow is mystery.

Today is a gift.5 @) S4 ?; _1 u4 n* ]; J' l
