You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
* u/ z& @$ ?" j, G6 c. z
* v. d* L) v: ~* AI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.. j& X, Y4 N! {4 K, k2 h1 C
; b  @8 \" F4 B+ Y7 d$ W$ Z6 k! C
His name was Kyle.. y- m% l- D9 E1 C  J
; z2 L. {2 D: Z9 ?1 q
It looked like he was carrying all of his+ L8 Z: m  ^; {" M- M$ c2 c
Books.
3 D+ ~' @, p, `* q# e# ~3 v- Y1 n9 Z$ S  d
I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?7 q3 T. ]  I  l6 W  n/ U

* W- [' X9 X* l6 `& EHe must really be a nerd."/ D, P) }6 d/ j, |( D2 h
8 y8 w7 H% s7 i, L5 ~. H" i- |- {
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.# f# b' N0 F" y# l, K8 g' C3 @, H
5 _1 O+ B  B9 l2 c3 R% D2 g" M. o
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
5 q$ s; R% Z8 ?" L% C! U9 M
/ H* M4 ]  t, z: {They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.3 Y5 I& {  A- c+ Y5 u* N5 @5 w( D
. g0 i6 t) T- [. y7 P9 c1 l
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
+ K0 i/ ?, o( w  ?! k/ k- Y0 i  n2 n
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes$ k; H: Z$ i. ^
  d* H- e6 S+ i
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.
: B3 u! O& U7 d
0 ^/ u7 @8 }: D4 hAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
& v: K2 y- B3 C% D
3 L/ X! w6 _, Q1 r$ gThey really should get lives.) J+ \+ k! x  v; L- Z

  J6 V0 g" \) ?- t; s' O" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"; O5 \/ s0 A: x/ ]( J  U  t

9 ]% O  J7 G$ B/ R, xThere was a big smile on his face.0 o0 H$ A- b+ M1 K+ t5 u

3 C; P0 ?- n# z: c# tIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.. A3 Z1 x6 m. q& z

  d. ?, @5 S$ x% @I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.: x9 Z; l* s3 _; [- t7 u" U

9 L5 [% C3 M  e4 E; O, y* T9 kAs it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.
/ E9 }  g' V, u1 {; u( z
& S: ~; W* ?' K# M6 p! A% [He said he had gone to private school before now.( m8 g! u; Z, L  A

9 y" b! x/ f& t7 Y9 tI would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
8 {7 M0 Y7 n6 k3 k" ?/ ^
2 V% }& M9 h9 v* r" \6 ?6 hWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.5 M# h& O" t( z( r: r; ~
' s4 {8 g) Y* F6 K$ a7 E+ I
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
+ J: \* k+ v/ _) n8 S. `
) v6 l1 o9 n/ m8 e/ P/ i6 VI asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.9 w+ I8 _2 J. h

4 T. D9 s3 d1 _2 N! y- T. {He said yes.* y+ w- T6 V+ M/ v: Z

2 M% l1 |5 y: q7 l+ \4 tWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him., {3 f) K$ ?3 M. I) @4 V, H

( |2 i- W- H% d; S& ^8 jMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
& _8 [) t1 U) b: [& _. S' w5 X' C' z+ B" J4 ^1 f3 J- A
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!- [9 p2 m( K! k7 d3 T3 l
; q- H8 {1 C: P" ~4 h3 O! s
" He just laughed and handed me half the books." p3 Q- B- M: S, g
$ z3 @# H; }' Q3 M4 Z
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.& G3 B: ?( f9 P& A$ e8 K

/ [9 W& [! p$ m7 bWhen we were seniors, we began to think+ q. [( o8 d5 s7 ]" L
About college.
% P0 X( F$ J# a4 s2 l8 J( {" K5 [( \+ a& ~9 \. x; c8 y
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I  p" z9 T2 i( b- U9 D2 h
Was going to Duke.% F6 h" P0 @& J/ }

4 X$ b% q7 M/ G) j* W" V& l, l: mI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.# H' x- ]; D, L2 f6 b
8 Q# E/ E- p6 G' N8 I5 D
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.$ F8 t( V8 Y9 }6 _0 ]* z6 J

1 w6 C' P  W4 ^Kyle was valedictorian of our class.
$ i$ Y: f# y3 ~! @
$ _, O3 |2 D4 }5 w: k9 @I teased him all the time about being a nerd.
6 p3 `" M% R& `: h% @7 M3 ~) q; @2 e: y6 k
He had to prepare a speech for graduation.
- _# ^- _% U/ V! U* A" G3 J9 K# a" l% F5 h: B2 Y( f2 a
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak- m( a# |4 ]7 c0 J6 H! J/ a8 N0 e

$ C8 j' E" {$ q  @% DGraduation day, I saw Kyle.: d4 T9 u5 l# z8 z" l* k9 ^

8 l$ V2 U1 p% K( a% X: G9 hHe looked great.
. Z3 c6 Q, o( p" k8 r5 q  i9 `
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
  p$ Q: C! ]* d0 q1 }# m
2 B9 g, p% i% v0 \8 A  xHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.# [" M) V9 B2 X- _2 _
+ e. o! M6 \3 Z# C
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
+ p# Q/ i6 B4 P8 {+ o+ B- c: n: u$ j* U* z% y8 \- ?' K' _
Boy, sometimes I was jealous.
* U  f, ]$ F! M1 ?6 J- e5 [) [# H( c3 {, b! }5 T! W
Today was one of those days.
0 h: L! k, ?/ E/ K! Q% v; ]% \: o' ]4 j8 s  I8 W; L8 [
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.8 K+ `3 M9 b. H. `8 d1 l

& h7 f9 w: r% J+ w' N3 x" S) }So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"& I% g. _* ]5 ^9 x! g- L5 B

8 {* H+ z4 U/ p, w! ]6 b& k- pHe looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.7 a( |, {8 @7 M9 M& ?) _
$ l9 ^) |! F5 n' }) R
"Thanks," he said.5 b4 O5 o! l( n/ F. a
# G* Y+ }; ?9 f6 B4 O
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
' O# `) c5 q  s9 t/ l7 u) _6 W. W; K3 W7 K. g
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
: z8 K! _" m, f) B+ S1 b8 P; E- x  V6 T' i9 k# ]5 k& ^1 y* F, _
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends..., e( v% K& R+ u- a

$ P7 b  d+ D7 ~  y: ]. a6 hI am here to tell all of you that being a
4 N: U. A; d$ J9 rFriend to someone is the best gift you can give them.. P2 t% Z9 `4 G& x; q

& K! ?3 U$ p5 OI am going to tell you a story."
6 \5 d" X) I0 ]9 ~1 x" z, a/ F! \) ]  @1 k1 t/ i
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.
) h$ G$ b) X7 U& R4 D5 B0 y) ?2 ^; Q  {- K& x0 L/ Z7 U% O
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.2 s, q5 n: k. F3 D
. |! A+ m4 L8 d) p$ R8 i7 _5 E
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
+ @; z% C5 T5 E5 Q' x/ e* a# W$ i, `  t( }, X! g9 W
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
! W2 `8 N2 C9 G. ~7 S* s0 e! S; {
"Thankfully, I was saved.
" V$ |( E/ k5 G' u/ m2 X1 g$ S: l# m" U  f% r
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable.". z2 O  H; s! f' d+ V$ R

8 M( m/ a7 {* b0 a% ~% I( C/ EI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.3 Z7 n8 n& |" [; B  v6 ~/ h5 s

  O# H1 Q$ _) z7 O* ]1 TI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.! F9 a# R) |$ e5 J) E& O) [" C

. h$ o' \% y- }* wNot until that moment did I realize it's depth.6 r9 K# ~5 O8 L2 ?

* _* K1 q& T+ jNever underestimate the power of your actions.
& p. x  @1 e# g6 N/ O
  ]( N* h1 v) T( m% JWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.
6 l) d0 I3 V0 ]! N  t; ~! W+ h2 ]4 u  S' G* x: _( ?% ]
For better or for worse.
4 P6 U& v: B0 T# X" y1 I
) }) S, |% _+ b9 h* J* F) }& ?God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.7 W, {8 ^) ?2 ~6 E, {

  ]3 P2 O! X! Q3 {+ wLook for God in others.
: x6 T. b% w/ o: a5 d! D' O8 b9 x! f# ?% }4 [& c
You now have two choices, you can:. S" j& ?, p: V5 I
1 N: D6 \1 Q0 H: Q
1) Pass this on to your friends or  G! X8 {! j+ V* }! ?9 t8 E0 b. B

3 h$ g7 T" g9 g9 Q0 q2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.
' D5 S# A3 y( b0 A7 e7 w) [7 S1 C; Y* p
As you can see, I took choice number 1.
$ l5 i2 T  T; t"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."% W8 i: B8 x/ C8 B3 u5 r' O

4 G' D0 i$ a7 L8 c2 P2 a+ ?9 hThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.& {$ L/ F5 i# \# ^
: k* \8 T; f9 T" ]; t
Tomorrow is mystery.' j- O. I) q+ y% g

1 L8 E7 a9 `1 }+ _7 u9 V* i/ TToday is a gift.7 {. E8 K3 [. h- S
