The camera selection depends on your current skill, types of photography you are doing, and more realistically, what your friends are using. I'll assume that your dad has basic skills and understandings of photography, as it makes no sense to buy a $2000 camera(or at least $2799 with a lens) but use the auto mode only. For auto modes, Canon 60D, T3i, Nikon D5100, Sony Nex series will serve you much better in a much smaller body.

Alright, as an amateur photographer, it is still hard to choose from those three hot babies. There are different types of amateurs, just like there are different types of pros. Here I'll list my personal opinion on those three cameras.

1. Canon 6D: The absolute choice for people who somehow know the basics of photography, and look for great image quality for their family photos. I'll keep it short, the 6D has everything you need for family photos as well as the awesome WiFi and GPS functions. It is also an awesome backup camera for pros who already own a 5D Mk3 or 1Dx, as the weight and GPS in 6D benefits them a lot.

2. Canon 5D Mk2: A steal for its price now. A pro body with pro features. For those who wanna learn more advanced photography techniques, buy this babe right away. $1799 for the body, $2599 with 24-105L lens, and $1849 with a 40mm f/2.8 lens (from Aden Camera), it is the cheapest full frame camera for now.

3. Nikon D600: A Nikon D3X in a Nikon D7000 body. That's all. The best camera for semi-pro work and backup camera to D4,D800,D3s.

All three should have excellent image quality. I said "should" because the 6D is not for sale yet, but it must be as good as 5D mk2, otherwise I'll puke on canon. Besides 6D, the 5D Mk2 and D600 have been proved to be awesome. In conclusion: family users with limited knowledge, go for 6D; Advanced shooters or semi-pros, grab D600; Semi-pros who like canon better than nikon, 5D Mk2 is yours.

Last but not least, check what your friends are using first. You will benefit a lot from their knowledge and gear if using the same camera body.

呵呵, 如果D600早发布一个月我也许就不换门了, 直接出D7000机身上6D, 可惜了俺的60微....不过入了无敌兔也没啥后悔的, 至今都用得很开心,特别是LD喜欢兔子的直出效果~~~将来升级镜头申请经费容易多了:)
