Newcomers are being offered some help when shopping for a home in Edmonton’s tight housing market.
! T5 ?0 W! w8 [3 g& C$ R* m6 Y, x& bImmigrant women and their families can now access a “household toolkit” crafted by a local service group for new immigrant families, through real estate agents. : L# ~" r; M* l i: V

In the tool kit are 75 common hand tools – like a hammer and screwdriver – as well a book on how to buy a home, a home maintenance schedule and other items.

“The tools are a symbol of hope for people trying to build new lives in Edmonton,” said Madeline Sarafinchan, president of the Edmonton Real Estate Board. # [% e6 s4 W4 b/ c2 U4 n

Josephine Pallard, the group’s executive director, said Alberta’s economic boom has caused a housing shortage that makes it more difficult for immigrants to find a place to live and integrate into Canadian society.
