A 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud man, who is fully dressed 1 w# Q- _1 U* h! z! ]
each morning by eight o'clock, with his hair fashionably coifed and 3 i W% W1 U' W& |9 |9 X% L
shaved perfectly applied, even though he is legally blind, moved to a ( ~1 k/ x3 H4 [! g- H, T* B/ O
nursing home today.
4 o5 m% Y- J; w4 P7 j g* ^" B7 S
His wife of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. . ?# H, V/ P3 L; g* @
After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, : t$ P; M0 p( H, ?5 w# G
he smiled sweetly when told his room was ready.

As he maneuvered his walker to the elevator, I provided a visual
' p2 H' j2 ~: l0 t7 {9 Y @description of his tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been ' q7 O- q& O/ w0 w7 k
hung on his window.
' b8 V2 ^6 g+ X4 T4 y0 f/ j3 l& o7 a- Y0 ^6 r% B
"I love it," he stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having
' I9 _9 p" X$ b3 j% N( \just been presented with a new puppy. : @. ?+ P8 v2 w/ s2 X
; O7 \7 p+ {# ^( j1 Y6 u9 O' v k z
"Mr. Jones, you haven't seen the room; just wait."

0 W" G/ j0 O {! K T# b"That doesn't have anything to do with it," he replied.

"Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my
6 m6 P' \2 F5 K/ v' F) p# ^room or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is arranged ... it's how
' q. n6 M4 v! K* _* l9 a. E- \I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it."

It's a decision I make every morning when I wake up.
! Q' {( R5 K9 [0 i" R0 _/ `: |) p! l2 B/ J+ i; _( L
I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I
5 [9 C( r" i- G; ahave with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed
) B9 V- x; T! R' K# }" _7 ?and be thankful for the ones that do. / W1 \$ {+ d0 L3 q( d1 c8 y
* }# W) z# H7 p
Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open I'll focus on the new ! S( v9 H4 z! N4 L4 }
day and all the happy memories I've stored away.
