$ b4 u: p: I0 n4 A; p( m: {. ^As a result, immigration and controversial laws around citizenship are coming up a bit more often on the doors, say candidates.
+ P" s- ]" x9 Z0 HConservative candidate Tim Uppal said his party has an excellent record on welcoming newcomers.$ E1 L% G9 U: J) f4 o

“Under this government, we have had the highest levels of sustained immigration in Canadian history,” he said.

Uppal also defends bill C-24, legislation that allows the government to strip citizenship from dual citizens convicted of terrorism or treason. He said when someone has been convicted and served their time of a charge as serious as terrorism it’s common sense to deport them.
; q d! _! t5 d7 ~( n2 p5 Q- ?“If we can have their citizenship stripped, because they’re a dual citizen, than I would rather not have them in this country,” he said.

- h- D: P" C! u( w1 d- g2 tLiberal candidate Amarjeet Sohi said the Conservative bill is discriminatory, treating Canadians with dual citizenship as unequal.
$ D3 q6 ]0 |* a“It will not make us safe,” he said. “Every Canadian should be treated the same, you can’t have different punishments for the same crime.”

“If you deport a terrorist to another country, where there may not be any rule of law, where they can create havoc in that country, how does that make the world a safe place?”$ t1 ]/ S* |# q8 _: Z) j6 }( ?" e
NDP candidate Jasvir Deol said the bill has many immigrant communities worried.. V& w6 s8 W% {
“People are really, really under fear and they want to see these changes,” he said.) H' ]4 M0 I* ^' x3 i
He said his party is unequivocal about the bill.
