, M6 B, U$ i; ~; Q- [, l2 }* |In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community4 J2 |) J: D6 \* m. \$ |
Engagement Training.! L+ w2 g5 s* z9 C7 L
9 N' M% t1 w( H3 t. ?We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
: {6 X& q3 ], @(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood
# g9 |/ K* C9 y9 M7 R0 K2 p0 _groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
& Z% z+ {/ W5 _) t1 h0 e; Xtogether across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy2 L5 t$ H+ t. e2 ]# P5 e" o# Y5 s2 h
Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.: a0 J& E* _! \* N8 N1 N

Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years
9 y: s! g$ x" Y/ L* s9 r* }" sof fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter% S0 m" l! @( h+ y+ }4 h
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the
0 F4 h7 [/ I* o. kinternational community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:5 X/ E* {# ?0 G) `/ b
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
+ u, M, V( `/ Y3 LIain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the2 [$ W t! n9 `1 S
island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
) c6 d! E/ l# A8 v4 K& d( Finternational peacekeeping operation.

This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their
6 I8 b% W, V% r9 G7 D/ Zown story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people
4 p8 f+ q) |. @, owho brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV7 o2 X; g% X% d2 ^0 S1 ]
screens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and) A1 P6 _# o! G9 O% y
Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
! \( Y$ o B3 w% U- f8 Q6 L. cimprobable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs9 T3 A* U3 z: @( j
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!7 [, m3 |7 x6 j
& R7 r9 N0 X9 w
According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the
( U2 d4 F& F) Q3 rsuccess of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
' y0 U1 ]4 V3 `' n% Q' D& f2 q Jprocess, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the
) }9 L6 g! k2 q- Nhands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.8 A3 v- k2 }& S" y) }
Also, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,9 c$ ?! v! O4 ~1 y
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
