Today I was volunteering at a post office. A man in an old jacket with uncombed hair came to the counter. He had a wallet in his hand, and put it on the counter. He told me:
; Z6 G% G# V% I! r; h: U$ e( f"I am going to send it back". ! G) g% K2 t Q" E
I did not understand what he meant by "it", because usually people would send a letter or a parcel back to the sender, and I did not see he had any of those. So I asked him:
5 N% Q6 P, c* j) \5 b7 C "I am sorry, what are you sending back?" 3 ~4 p$ m1 U& P' z8 G
He said, "the Wallet, I am sending back the wallet." Then he added: "I am going to pay the postage."
' H; B( e$ F4 i"Oh, you found a wallet, and you are going to send it back to the person who lost it?" . c7 P! R: Q* l, m* U2 R# ]+ Y c- L
"Yes, I did."
* U! X& N6 V' W0 C; }Finally I understood: this dishevelled man found a wallet, and he was going to return it to the owner by post.
1 i7 }) F1 w. k h$ PHe took the ID card from the wallet, and showed me the address of the loser of the wallet. I saw there were several one-hundred bills in the wallet.
& m7 }" w9 Y2 Q5 t$ M"Are you going to take some money from the wallet to pay the postage?"
( R8 ^; Z. x) O# ]"No, I am not. I do not do those things."
- X) | W! J' P$ D bHe took out his wallet, which was nearly worn-out, small, and almost empty. There were some coins inside.
- J/ ~5 s R+ I, K/ r0 sI gave him a bubbled envelope, and instructed him where to write the addresses. He wrote the owner's address, but stopped at writing a return address. He asked:
8 s' m5 Y5 [& n6 x: f"Is it okay that I do not write this part?": w$ B! g7 u; e- Z. t* j# [9 {
"Yes, you may." I thought he must want to be a nameless hero. But he said:
% r6 K2 J. l% M8 I2 a"I do not have an address."( O% b2 N1 }& @; i6 e0 O& H
I was surprised: "oh, where do you live?"
' Z6 k. K% c- P& j: G5 _7 A! y5 PHe did not look up, and said: "I do not have a home."
4 E: |1 j$ {: J8 O9 s, iMy heart had a sudden jump. I realized that this is a homeless man who found money but was sending it back to the person who lost it. # @" h: c9 Z9 u/ h
He did not a posses a home, but he had a big heart. He had the precious fortune of being a man of integrity.
