( y; S6 B& [9 wStudents at the University of Alberta have voted in favour of mandatory bus passes, a move that will cost students an extra $75 every term.

A vote held earlier in the week saw 84 per cent of students in favour of the passes, which will be mandatory regardless of whether or not they ride on transit.

The U-Pass will give students unlimited travel on public transit in Edmonton, Saint Albert and Strathcona County.

, V5 i6 ]& Q5 u4 EGetting to this point took five years of debate and negotiations, said U of A student union president Samantha Power on Friday.! f2 v1 R- v+ u) Z

"We really needed to make sure that it was affordable for students because it's mandatory. We didn't want students who don't use transit as often to be put at a disadvantage, so at $75 for four months, it's about one round trip a week."

% `: c) `$ ~. u. }Power said the U-Pass will be environmentally friendly by encouraging more students to use transit, and those who already buy monthly passes will save about $300 a year when the new pass kicks in next fall.
