Students at the University of Alberta have voted in favour of mandatory bus passes, a move that will cost students an extra $75 every term.

; T I$ w0 `! nA vote held earlier in the week saw 84 per cent of students in favour of the passes, which will be mandatory regardless of whether or not they ride on transit.& W7 ^0 j Q. O

The U-Pass will give students unlimited travel on public transit in Edmonton, Saint Albert and Strathcona County.

Getting to this point took five years of debate and negotiations, said U of A student union president Samantha Power on Friday., R/ b( s6 A. k8 l7 K* H0 ^# W! \
' _* W) q' c- K& V# P8 L) h"We really needed to make sure that it was affordable for students because it's mandatory. We didn't want students who don't use transit as often to be put at a disadvantage, so at $75 for four months, it's about one round trip a week."! G! a; D3 O2 F, h* M" O3 ~

Power said the U-Pass will be environmentally friendly by encouraging more students to use transit, and those who already buy monthly passes will save about $300 a year when the new pass kicks in next fall.
