CHIEF RETURNING OFFICER

Remuneration: $6,032.00 contract

1 C) S9 x  W. P- M" b# D8 dJOB SUMMARY:  The Chief Returning Officer reports to the President of  
: O) ?" v0 l0 P! G  E' Fthe Students' Union and oversees all electoral logistics as per Bylaw  3 C0 V) Q/ x7 Z; u  u0 h' ?! r
2000.  The Chief Returning Officer shall be recommended to Students'  + @+ S" {; W. t6 Z6 g
Council in the manner set out in the Council Administration Committee  
2 N+ u) V% a2 Q8 M  D3 i. v, \Standing Orders by April 15 and serve from May 1 to April 30 of the  
3 n6 y, t  i+ V" P6 e' m, i, C2 ryear following their appointment.% V# A, p' n' l7 `

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
0 D/ O  ~5 ~6 f# u+ o" h# I* l5 L+ N% T7 P' b5 q0 {% }
1) To run the elections as per Bylaws 2000
3 `! i6 Z$ c( L8 }4 o4 z7 B: F8 @" c2 k& |8 O' L
2) To run referenda/plebiscites as per Bylaw 2000.
# C/ {6 n( Y7 k* \2 Q- o
8 D% K. V2 P5 g. y! K  E3) To choose the Deputy Returning Officer(s) and assign their duties.9 Q* @/ L; Z+ k" k4 N, x8 y# Z; s

  R2 w6 ~+ l7 m: O+ _$ ?! D+ I4) To organize polls during elections/referenda, including appointing  
% [2 Q2 k  Z! q& M* ?( vadequate poll staff and situating polls at appropriate locations  % ?5 q0 v  @, h1 |% m6 f9 N
across campus, and advertising the poll locations.$ ~4 p; x9 z( I; r& h- s

* {9 V) _+ r) M6 H7 I: U5) To oversee the physical count of the ballots during elections/ + m5 R# m; c7 F
referenda.

6) To report the result of an election/referendum to the appropriate  * O. z  B  I- t8 s+ ]
parties.

. W& Y$ E9 P$ J+ a- s9 A. y9 _7) To facilitate classroom speaking arrangements during an election/
# \' @/ U+ O3 M* Y. L. Wreferendum.% W( A8 t6 F  ?6 _4 i# q# k& p

To enforce budgetary regulations as stipulated in the Elections  
2 J( _5 p# Q9 Y( `- IBylaw 2000." z' S0 S: ]5 J8 u. ~

10) To be available to all parties during elections/referenda for a  / l5 U2 x; v6 A' U; g& E& d
minimum of four (4) working hours a day, between Monday to Friday,  
" d, t/ D! l: B- R4 B/ P# Ffrom the first working day after nominations close until the last day  " C" {4 X( y; i2 }( S0 @9 Y
of voting.  These hours are to be posted in advance.' b  V) |* Q$ {+ Q* [

9 _) s7 v* V4 O2 ~6 L0 E11) To act as the arbitrator in any dispute which may arise during  
! [2 g) h" s* I- p+ ythe course of an election/referendum.0 W" C& V/ R. S/ B) L. c

9 L! u; s- j& z8 }. S12) To ensure that a cost effective and accurate ballot counting  
, Y; B% Y) Z, X# D# Y# e  uprocess is in place.
( ?" B7 @6 a( b+ W7 p
* g! i& V- S6 c13) To submit to Students' Council, prior to April 30, a final report  " G8 Y) W; g9 n0 ~) D' Z
of activities and recommendations.+ v2 f: u# b' ]0 B1 d

  X& t4 ?) {+ e% a6 a7 B$ ~2 a3 e14) To organize a minimum of one (1) forum to be held during the week  
4 D- t) @% F4 G- T0 |2 B; Lof campaigning.

7 r! @" o+ w0 |) X7 d2 p15) Perform other job related duties as required by the Council  ' a1 X  d/ f. T! i" \" b6 W8 b. n
Administration Committee.

QUALIFICATIONS:
+ v; ]/ N" p; q# T# `7 \6 V. K( `9 o# ?0 f
1) Must be an undergrad student registered in at least one (1) course  % A4 h* G+ f$ E8 \+ M, t& q0 {
for each of the terms of Winter Session and shall be a full Students'  
# |( H6 @5 u' v9 S, l* @Union member.3 l" H, ?; D" g! {. @. X/ G! ?
' w% v7 Q5 y( t
2) Must have some experience in student elections.
  X' u7 i7 Y/ W8 s9 U, T/ q, c
. O* P; }" e/ u: u2 g5 j3) Shall not concurrently hold a position on Students' Council, or    k9 x8 I. ]6 C$ }7 J; ^3 ^
any of its standing boards, committees, or any other paid position  
7 |5 |9 Z$ v6 Gwith the Students' Union.

  N3 i3 q/ X8 v7 g  ?4) Willingness and ability to work varying hours.* u6 f' h0 y; ~# f1 Q; H9 h, F

5) Ability to deal effectively with Students' Union and University
