CHIEF RETURNING OFFICER

Remuneration: $6,032.00 contract


JOB SUMMARY:  The Chief Returning Officer reports to the President of  
the Students' Union and oversees all electoral logistics as per Bylaw  
# B% J3 E# u! `; e" A3 f. L; A0 G: k2000.  The Chief Returning Officer shall be recommended to Students'  
, j# [& B# B" e/ \: l0 M1 yCouncil in the manner set out in the Council Administration Committee  
Standing Orders by April 15 and serve from May 1 to April 30 of the  
4 z! @, g$ j& D: q1 Myear following their appointment.

: r- X/ d0 `& v2 ODUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

, D7 N( N. {6 q7 ^1) To run the elections as per Bylaws 2000

# E3 X# C7 @; ]2) To run referenda/plebiscites as per Bylaw 2000.

3) To choose the Deputy Returning Officer(s) and assign their duties.

4) To organize polls during elections/referenda, including appointing  
3 I1 ^3 ^5 o/ t5 J+ ?4 d& zadequate poll staff and situating polls at appropriate locations  
across campus, and advertising the poll locations.

+ M6 s  N" `- ^* |5) To oversee the physical count of the ballots during elections/
referenda.

, d( l( j4 ~) V3 o& m6) To report the result of an election/referendum to the appropriate

5 a0 t- s. {. N# s% z! ]4 T9 r7) To facilitate classroom speaking arrangements during an election/
! E7 C2 ?1 r2 V( Lreferendum.

3 M0 W. K) M* U' l6 e To enforce budgetary regulations as stipulated in the Elections  
3 G( ?+ Z8 j6 k" z6 S$ vBylaw 2000.

& ~# o' ?1 h, ]  C- H10) To be available to all parties during elections/referenda for a  
6 t8 @% D# \- z: B+ h1 iminimum of four (4) working hours a day, between Monday to Friday,  
from the first working day after nominations close until the last day  
* ]! ]' _3 q- V# g8 V( rof voting.  These hours are to be posted in advance.
7 n+ o2 L" w0 L) u: a' N% {' j
$ o5 J" c0 w3 |5 p( k11) To act as the arbitrator in any dispute which may arise during  
the course of an election/referendum.

12) To ensure that a cost effective and accurate ballot counting  
process is in place.

5 L1 I7 ^5 A3 e7 u. V13) To submit to Students' Council, prior to April 30, a final report  
of activities and recommendations.

3 I4 C/ T, h, s; t% s14) To organize a minimum of one (1) forum to be held during the week  
* z; j2 ]7 B! Q: b# \of campaigning.

15) Perform other job related duties as required by the Council  
Administration Committee.

QUALIFICATIONS:
' X5 J/ m0 s$ U2 H! r! ]
1) Must be an undergrad student registered in at least one (1) course  
! `- V, L5 M3 B# `& {; @for each of the terms of Winter Session and shall be a full Students'  
8 x+ _* N3 z9 e! L) HUnion member.
- ?. _: k% M  f% B0 E( Y  b  T; v2 z
2) Must have some experience in student elections.
  O. p; a/ f9 \# m" Z/ v2 q) c
- M0 m$ X1 a/ u* f3) Shall not concurrently hold a position on Students' Council, or  
$ s# w2 @1 L# h6 bany of its standing boards, committees, or any other paid position  
9 n, }9 |8 F( P  k; ~with the Students' Union.

4) Willingness and ability to work varying hours.

5) Excellent project management skills are required.

4 k6 M( @# Q8 Z0 H% m5) Ability to deal effectively with Students' Union and University
