Edmonton Transit is currently seeking applications for the challenging position of Conventional Transit Operator — for positions starting in Summer 2007. This is a long term posting with the successful applicants being called to fill positions on an ‘as-required’ basis.

FUNCTIONS:
•        Transport passengers to and from destinations on prescribed scheduled routes.
•        Collect proper fare, issue transfers.
' P( D& y. N# \2 i: k! a7 Y6 C) f•        Respond to customer queries concerning transit information.
•        Operate a Transit diesel bus and/or trolley coach, on a day, night or split shift under varying weather
and traffic conditions.
/ F, w% I5 O" g& c•        Adhere to schedules.
  m1 R, R/ y* n6 b) R8 I+ J4 W•        Obey and follow defensive driving guidelines, local traffic laws and Transit system regulations.

•        Handle diverse and challenging situations.
' l$ ]2 }. h( A# m•        Communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
•        Provide excellent customer service.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
•        Grade eleven (11) or an equivalent educational level is required. Formal training in driving or public relations will be considered an asset.
•        Proven ability to deal directly with the public, with well-developed customer service skills; the ability
to be diplomatic and courteous in dealing with the public, from the first passenger to the last passenger
of the day.
•        Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job (operate bus controls, re-set trolley poles, provide passengers with assistance i.e. strollers, wheelchairs etc.).
, l' @& p* E% P, G4 v: M$ v. J•        Applicant must possess a valid class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's license (non-probationary and non-graduated) and must have held a valid operator's license for (3) consecutive years.
•        Selected applicants must pass the Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's class 2 written test, at their own expense, prior to training.
•        Applicant must provide a current driver's abstract (obtained within 14 days of the video test date)
# y' x: o5 ]  o, [3 {showing no suspensions and no more than 3 demerits recorded over the previous 2 year period.
•        Ability to pass a written English comprehension test, a public relations video-test, a driving skill
video-test, a Functional Abilities Recruitment Evaluation (F.A.R.E.) test, a pre-employment City medical examination and a Police Security clearance (at their own expense, prior to training).
) X% Y/ C& F% t•        Successful completion of the ETS Training Program.
•        Internal ETS applicants must have completed all mandatory in-house training.

HOURS OF WORK:
Various hours of shift work (straight or split shift), any time of the day, any 5 days of the week
& x5 V! z% K2 S9 |" U1st year:  Guaranteed minimum 67.4 hours bi-weekly
Thereafter:  Guaranteed minimum 74 hours biweekly

: Z) ]. Q# e9 q, STraining Rate:  $16.56 Hourly
Post Training Rate:  $20.36 - $25.45 Hourly
The rates quoted are in accordance with a collective agreement between the Union and the City of Edmonton.
