I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I1 k6 u' j6 r- y# ~1 K
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,* l3 ]6 K, r( ^5 n6 @* y
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and1 l+ U- e$ q. E% U8 M' d
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
2 t" Z; s8 n) O" L) O: Bwill acquire language earlier and faster.

In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately& \& X7 b* p% p' z
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
1 P9 A, w( {& r: pvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or. C c. s* c2 Z6 }. Q3 ?$ U2 a8 Q
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you6 q+ ^& ]/ k/ _
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your1 @ _4 Y* f9 Q/ Y
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.! G) d6 o/ p# \
6 r. |9 u5 _- u' DAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
; m" D* B$ N" o; x1 cbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
7 R( `" ?# u' ~' W; E9 x Bthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
4 t! g3 f+ e; F6 r; Qproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby1 t' B0 n: p9 S% x7 k2 l
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
+ A, A& U+ `5 h) j) o, vthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.
, ]# _% Y+ W9 U: y& ~9 K N& C% R+ }7 ~9 C0 `
Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,: X0 q* R! [2 O1 k" Z" I- ~' }
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.9 q# T5 b1 Q7 G( S

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
$ a" C$ q2 M' o' gover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she8 S8 _4 \" ^4 K: S# j
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will) D+ }4 w9 n% I
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate3 `# @/ ]. J+ s, g2 q, q1 j
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
" | Z* k2 [' B' P! j3 R- Z. vAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data2 @+ e9 ~; G( V8 W
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show {' l* t/ e; h# r4 }7 i5 L
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
' P/ G* I7 _ M `in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
1 V5 L6 {: ~7 a$ w$ B8 ?: Qdestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,+ L( H2 A- a. B: c; D6 W) a- E
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
u4 D1 d5 _1 z+ A. j% b |4 D8 {Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific) N0 T6 i* I( C+ _6 P
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child' W+ l/ ~* I& u6 U# q A9 s
and the parents participating in this study.% h& F, ^7 l& F
