am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
' }" u/ k( |' N+ h) q& n. p" Rconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
( ?/ A5 N1 @3 h' p( \9 A' X4 B$ ~% Cattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
% g9 `) U1 S2 Z6 o4 c0 D K# ~will acquire language earlier and faster.2 _; w, a8 ]9 r! S$ ?7 ]# C: s/ J

In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately* K) V, c, P4 P' |! x' J) w) M
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
% [+ _7 G+ D9 ivideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or% J1 Q! j$ [9 I4 Q3 v* x
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you& v( f* l0 B1 n. S+ A5 K
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
6 H* o6 Q* E$ C: O. h- s& ebaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.
' O% ?) Q4 w$ H# d) j3 U9 K% X2 M7 ?$ \+ f6 n0 E: o
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common$ b3 z/ a/ U2 {% ?$ y# t l
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
0 k. c. O5 f: U. a% u% H# i! s0 Qthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.$ x, e! Y. `( U: X: u7 y! Y/ @- T& l
) K9 f+ ~: {0 Y. f
Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
7 v- p8 e8 J; r, }! i0 Z/ P9 l2 [produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
0 s$ `# H4 g2 I }. m- h; o; `6 O* ?knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
$ T6 C' ?9 i5 Hthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

+ A4 u, t6 J7 [) E* ^5 }9 tFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
: ~2 _) M0 U+ ^. T% R- e& [the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done4 S% D) A0 h( p
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she8 j5 ]* n2 T" r# V \
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
. G% j$ W" p9 z o R) ptake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data- e1 _6 ]% c$ d) s0 I5 n* {0 p
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
; x; m3 a4 e# u% A* ivideo clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
1 C" l. c6 @' }in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and( T* g: O& |6 n/ I Q, t- \$ @5 w* `2 d
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
& Q. J( p6 A; Z! c) Rand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of2 G5 Q9 l* m2 Q3 q5 i2 n
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific: K' V2 b$ m& J9 D
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child F/ _& D9 \, Q8 e2 v' q
