 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

; L# U+ F7 X% U* B: N The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
; J: k5 R8 p1 v$ b! T; G$ m. \to their first ministry, to reopen a church . z/ u, R( B/ g0 p% j: a; g L# H. d0 s
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October , `9 L* {- `9 j5 @( p# r
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
0 |2 t$ Y+ s6 Y, M$ e; Ntheir church, it was very run down and needed $ ^* I/ l! K; x) Y- I
much work. They set a goal to have everything 2 f. J1 |% ^, Z" d1 i9 ?
done in time to have their first service
% z/ f2 B# ~% B) con Christmas Eve.
; n7 n; [' _! C7 DT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,* ? L k) I% b7 y9 a, `" D
painting, etc, and on December 18
* \9 B% r9 {# w( G0 a6 t/ S; Vwere ahead of schedule and just about finished. 9 Y3 o6 I" O6 K6 p
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving " ~4 X W/ U; g8 p
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. ! J/ }& {( Y, j. n: q
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
% |) s7 N4 ^ G; J; B# `0 A0 BHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had
* {9 g' b6 T) B' Q8 [5 Dleaked, causing a large area of plaster about
$ z% R! G% g: N2 x, Q( W20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall + n# {: ?- V6 G- d/ v" S2 s
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
; @7 C' X+ A8 b; K4 }- d' O. n$ i: Qbeginning about head high. 6 \7 L( j/ C9 U# M$ Y
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
3 S" k- `0 w1 _4 U: m- `and not knowing what else to do but postpone 3 X. |3 j5 H; Y* m. H+ s8 L3 p
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. 4 y# f. D. p6 F4 D: J! f. ~
On the way he noticed that a local business was
3 i2 ^8 t+ x2 @& X/ Y9 Qhaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he Q q g3 u) M$ D9 i7 V
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, ) s0 O+ @6 h# B
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
4 V) F; V( N) `9 P. \. @with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
4 M+ [" K7 d: H3 lembroidered right in the center. It was just ! _& U- d6 S0 R; ~
% E! Z4 k* X$ z
/ @; R8 X# Z3 n% E 7 ^1 @" b V2 L9 q$ v

& d }5 l9 b$ ?7 \& d5 y5 F& t9 |3 @2 E$ ?
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 8 t( P3 w! [5 G
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
4 r' }! B7 b$ S, s$ twoman running from the opposite direction was * b) b6 i7 y S9 t& u
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor - Z3 l6 N: o8 c9 w# h# s
invited her to wait in the warm church for
" N* s* K- @% i' Y9 Rthe next bus 45 minutes later.
2 T7 R7 z: f+ } Y3 z5 ?' u7 Q4 \1 I4 N
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor " L5 F6 {9 Q3 L
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
5 c; r9 D% h$ kup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor 4 r. _' G2 k6 \6 S! X0 Y
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. * t8 N; V! E; ^# d- c: ^
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
* g2 a/ N/ M, Z: \0 q, _aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"$ Z3 s2 E1 o2 @ T% `
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" ! Q$ K/ d- C+ n) ^0 y
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check' L1 A' E' _2 R, |7 l7 X
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
3 J6 g& V7 J+ U2 s+ Mit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had ' e% u# u4 k3 U" t; W
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . 7 Y# X2 I) J' d4 {
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
- |" }9 p9 N ], K! Q5 Ltold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
2 A7 u& O) X- i2 q& [ k$ ywoman explained that before the war she and , E6 F0 J' Q# @1 `
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
' P3 x3 C6 A3 l
6 y2 q: k9 [7 H. P: W2 z! x9 CWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. 3 M+ z( x; n7 B7 S* U" q
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
' D) F7 u8 t; B% R2 V- D* F' EHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
' h8 P% @" C; t& V0 {2 x$ ehusband or her home again. 3 _3 k. x! r* I6 d% n9 H0 D- S
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;$ S( z8 K8 q, d% z- Y
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
) u' X6 [, ^& K' B9 x* NThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That) D! B8 a& {: b+ Z. z& ?) U
was the least he could do. She lived on the other, t5 B# y5 M' Q0 g) G o) q. w7 {
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn . F, [ J- |5 q# x
for the day for a housecleaning job.
; ] ]6 J- n3 D: f1 nW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
" R6 B+ h( `2 YEve. The church was almost full. The music and the
( y5 l4 E- K$ j; bspirit were great. At the end of the service, the
( p1 I! g9 V, ~6 Npastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 3 ?" s+ r4 z. z1 E% L/ H
and many said that they would return.. ' f. x# _5 `4 w# A8 k1 V% Y
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
, _9 t) t! [- q' c+ h$ ^from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the 3 \$ }9 r$ e! e, g
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he 8 d% B7 p" ?; u9 W, k q# u
wasn't leaving. ( M8 |. F5 s( Z- l
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on + c* S% u+ p9 E5 l7 `2 d0 u
the front wall because it was identical to one s1 X2 B: q2 M7 s
that his wife had made years ago when " f- V& w; m: m6 [9 ^: h9 E
they lived in Austria before the war and how 4 E, I+ m7 T( ^8 U; O- f+ z. l
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
Z3 f* I; U, T1 z9 r% F& aH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
) |# X2 W; `: ]2 t; ?. L; Tforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
7 a0 c5 f6 V/ V0 u! Asupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
: Q n- Y) t4 f0 `1 h- u/ Aput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home8 G# a. J* w" z# G1 \
again all the 35 years between.
' D, D. ?3 x, K/ |" D6 t sT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to E }' |1 i& i- M' R
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
4 O. u0 P; w7 A bIsland and to the same house where the pastor ; S% m& W7 y4 M3 {
had taken the woman three days earlier. 0 l# K6 U3 E1 Q. U" I8 l6 t
He helped the man climb the three flights of: [8 _6 l" o: v6 x
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on* T: C! [9 W" v5 H0 [/ _
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas 8 q4 B$ @! d0 h% i: F& Z% [7 W
reunion he could ever imagine.

cares we know He will see us through.

9 t! Y( `. g3 _0 _& Odifficult at best, just remember I'm here
