I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
x% l# g& u, N3 F0 M$ oam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
) W( ?2 b7 ?7 J7 Dconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
1 O% r; `/ d" Gattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them, W9 d I$ E4 {$ `9 `
will acquire language earlier and faster./ p" R" `5 d. q/ E4 B) a

In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately9 \% z0 p9 I5 N( F! w
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
" y" E) x* g1 Q3 e0 E6 hvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or9 O8 R; l6 v5 |
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
2 P/ A U* Y. r- amay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
- p/ s6 e$ m9 |) i; z' f/ `1 Zbaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.

At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
! T- T/ Z" |: ^# ^3 e" M5 X' tbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and$ Q" R. i. l# ?
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.' U: A9 L$ T& r6 g
% u; x y7 c: t4 g% Z [, ~% ]$ iStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
% ]/ `3 q3 X. a/ Q% vproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby% u. \+ q- C1 ^! a! G) m- q
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
; z E& R6 Y8 d' X+ C" Rthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes." @4 m4 I6 v( e: ]. H. K
$ S$ t+ C: f! ]( S* F/ }, C6 CFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
\# ?% X; n8 k- [1 H# Kthe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.( w! A. }5 N A$ N* ^
% o0 e- z; W$ `5 w: c& T5 MThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done+ e- P# F' I; P: ?0 N! V
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
5 g7 y( o5 t7 @is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will4 _7 f2 ^, u( ?* r, e0 F8 b, g
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate- ?6 c& E$ ^- a: Z: H
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.

9 _+ P; F2 P+ N( s0 Ovideo clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used3 F a( a! \. p" v2 g
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and6 V) H8 ~2 ]) @ G! t) ~
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,$ ?+ ?# z* ]& n
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
1 j- v; A; U, x( J! q3 x0 {" L/ iHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
+ j1 y5 l% [+ E$ zjournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child6 {! v' P! T3 |/ ]1 u# j
and the parents participating in this study.
