" ]- [. e3 n# Jam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
6 k$ ^4 {, g2 e! J: fconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
6 Q/ s# L# d1 z4 Hattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them( C3 ~8 l8 k3 R( j8 w) |" s
will acquire language earlier and faster.
, p( h1 B7 F- `) x5 K* r F3 O% u% H( Z B5 V, l
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
2 \, |1 X- m2 V }5 \30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
5 k9 @% @$ z& e {videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or3 G! M1 n; J5 O0 V9 \& h" D
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
( H0 N$ E3 n% M% W9 Z7 \ Smay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
4 p8 U/ l* }. [6 S& `& _. {baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.& B! U z( o: N* F: B
/ V& U3 q. [/ C' ]
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
1 M$ [' j0 A. V, X& k% A9 dbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
$ h! E7 n* x1 y, `) a: e% vthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.
1 o, E. s6 `. u9 N% F+ c; A( f h& ~8 h! a. O: d- e9 _ }) S
Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously/ L$ G, p( Q9 z) Z% F) W
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby' v' _7 ]& r+ }( X0 l7 A( h
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to7 k ~$ p- z( v6 n
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.' `* v! ^: c0 V/ l' |8 J

Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,$ ]7 M; g, Y) n* t/ M
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done& u0 j* p: U/ S6 J/ _7 V+ | ~
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she7 i2 X: W2 X+ x" z
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
6 d% @7 O; U n, z$ Z! F4 ~" R- Rtake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate5 D' z$ F; R: F* L4 }1 T
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
2 E2 Q' A/ p5 K; Y* _As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
& z# G0 o! v# o1 o! i; q, G/ Dare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
! L+ _6 O8 g: |1 Mvideo clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used2 t: M' j$ v8 d- Y" m
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
( N+ U+ I* u4 \/ @0 \, F! bdestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,+ ]; L4 {0 O2 g- h* p. }7 k
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of D4 z* F+ m/ a- o
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
$ I: K- q' V$ D2 X4 Ojournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
