am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,: V! |/ C4 H9 }! J
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
; I0 M" B" a3 ]1 r6 hattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
0 r4 ^+ u! V5 }9 T# j R7 [" i: ?will acquire language earlier and faster.
* V. Z' [8 E, f; x/ O! w+ u4 K, {! }. h5 f
) _9 J! u; x# L+ i1 N4 o$ I* zIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately. F6 A2 V, j* Q+ E) m. _
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
* f4 \: A$ ^* cvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
( e3 J4 P$ p! i N2 o( k/ [. Q" Asimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
1 v# ?4 s- d- P* r" f: u: ~) wmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
( x6 i; t1 C4 r8 o7 h3 s& Tbaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.

' {% J* K) X5 D, u4 e5 [7 \- P" P, FAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common& C$ s9 q% v+ y
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and' Z: N' v. Y: t3 S3 j
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.. I( T' V2 p8 L

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously9 O( G9 \/ z8 ^/ T( j* |9 P# F
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
( l9 l9 a( O4 U+ w+ x, M9 \! h! tknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
r. H4 w7 ~. a( o: bthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

" B0 E7 j( E+ P2 ]4 V' q3 z; ~0 y6 {Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,9 o# ?* |- y2 z; ]2 M" f- S
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.+ Z& ?# n+ T) a6 R. Q" k# p
. U, a# ^5 ?0 S8 mThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done6 f4 L- }2 Q' J" Q
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she/ `) W' @# G" \7 x$ g
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will

# V" ]0 G- L3 E, t+ hare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show/ c: X) G9 ~: q
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used1 i7 S2 r( ?& S* U! J
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and' I: e/ k$ {+ b) V& ~" ], s
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
) k H1 O9 K- l; X5 ^! tand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of& J9 U0 M( k6 }1 v! `
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
Q" k8 ?& d' l1 [- Yjournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child' B$ |: J3 C0 @ U0 `# V
and the parents participating in this study.
