CALGARY -- Alberta's new solicitor general hopes to have more boots walking the beat this year, intensifying the fight against crime in the province.

4 W$ t1 u2 [- A+ iFred Lindsay told Sun Media yesterday plans are in the works to increase the number of RCMP officers and special constables patrolling Alberta roads this year.

) b( U" ?/ \) }* V' h5 w6 s+ S. _Though any moves have to be approved in the province's budget, Lindsay said he's looking at boosting the ranks of the Mounties patrolling rural Alberta, to help curb a flood of urban organized crime groups, who are moving their operations to rural areas where there is less of a police presence. $ u# n; P/ V" O! Chop shops, where stolen cars are stripped for parts, and marijuana grow-ops have all started to sprout up throughout rural Alberta, said Lindsay.
